For Newbies & Failures- Everything you have been told about making $ online is a lie

Everything you have ever read or been told about making money online was probably over-hyped. Depending on who told you what, nearly everyone online has some reason for telling you whatever it is that they are telling you, multiplied by 10x if the topic is Internet marketing.

For example, right now I am giving you good information you will hopefully find valuable in an attempt to get you to click onto my signature and either sign up for my mailing list or buy my eBook about writing your own eBook(half kidding). Either way, the moment you learn to realize the reason someone is telling you something about making money online and separate it from the substance, the better off you will be.

What I am getting at is that those that tell you “xyz” is the best method for generating traffic usually have some sort of interest in selling you “xyz.” Right now, “xyz” is Twitter, and every Internet marketer under the sun is either exploring or diving head first into Twitter thinking it is a potential goldmine, when in reality it is just one of many different avenues for promotion, and may not even be good for whatever it is you are doing online. Always take anything you hear about “the next super secret _____” with a grain of salt, and follow the money.

My next big piece of advice is that you need to commit yourself to learning, take in a bunch of information for a month or two, and then take action with everything you have been taught. Once you get to the stage of producing, stay updated and continue with your education, but always remember that turning thought into action is really where you will see the greatest results. Don’t get overwhelmed with all the information out there or get lost surfing the web, figure out what you are trying to do, put together a game-plan and go to work.

The final piece of advice I have for newbies is to stay far away from anything related to marketing/making money online because you probably have no clue what the hell you are talking about, and will likely get wrapped up in a niche that is uber-competitive. The key to success is knowing what you are talking about, having an interest in the subject, and a burning desire to be successful.

Despite building a few small websites, I didn’t really learn what Internet marketing was all about until I wrote my first eBook about soccer and put together a plan for promoting it. Looking back, the biggest reason it worked was because I told myself (and my girlfriend) that I was not going to give up until I could make $10/day doing next to nothing, which meant 3.2 sales per work. Goal accomplished, onto the next one.

Hell, I didn’t even know what I wanted to do with my life, and I am now working for a great company with excellent prospects, absolutely loving my life. It has been said a million times, but the true secret is, and will always be dedication, and working smarter, not harder.

    Good luck!

Now here is an angle I've never seen before; selling an ebook by saying that all ebooks are lies.

    Good luck with that.

That isn't necessarily my angle at all. My angle is that success is all about educating yourself, and then putting in work in the right places. How can you argue with that?

Working smarter is really the key part of that. If you don't listed to what others BS you about internet marketing and just do stuff on your own, then you can learn from your own mistakes and experience and grow as a marketer and blogger

Totally agree, working smarter is the key and unfortunately the only way to get the experience you need to work smarter is trial and error and study.

Great advice. I don't really agree that "everything you've been told about making money online" is a lie. A lot of what the gurus say is actually true... the problem is that it's much easier to tell someone what to do and even how to do it than it is to actually do it. For example, I can say the following in one breath: "get tons of back links to your site in order to derive SEO benefits"... but getting all those back links may take a LOOONG time and a lot of effort.

Perhaps what is a lie is the perception that online marketing is quick and easy. Some of it is surprisingly quick and easy, but in my experience a LOT of it is a matter of putting in a lot of hours and a lot of trial and error before working out what works and what doesn't.

Nonetheless, hang in there people, as long as you're enjoying the journey, the destination is worth it!

Trying to come up with an interesting title, clearly it didn't work.

As you can see from the actual post, I phrased it "everything you have been told was probably over-hyped." I stand by that assessment.

As hard as it is to believe, I never bought or read any sort of "make money online" product before I wrote my first eBook, and I think I ended up all the better for it. There is nothing like trial and error, all you need is to stay motivated and continue to refine your strategies.

Good advice. I also believe that the make money niche is a tough one for newbies. Pick a niche and learn as much as you can within that niche. Over time, you will find that it becomes easier to write content and to answer questions relating to your chosen niche. this is because the more you learn about it, the easier it becomes to work on that niche.

    Good luck

    Yeah, not shit.

But, as you can already see, there are a lot of dummies out there, so he won't need the good luck, especially on this board, the land of the dumbasses.

    I absolutely agree with Annaj.

The doing part is the real secret. But unfortunately enough, few do it.

BizDetail makes a good point about the need to be aware when someone has monetary incentive to promote a certain product or idea. It's one of many things to take into consideration as you learn. But that doesn't necessarily mean that the information they're promoting is not true. You just have to use some common sense and go with your gut.
