I'm sure that you can use adsense on a free Wordpress account. There's plugins as well, if I'm correct.

Wordpress occasionally displays Adsense advertisement of free Wordpress.com blogs and collect revenue.

But as a publisher, we are not allowed place any advertisement according to Wordpress TOS.

Don't forget the 50 other threads asking the same question. Had two of these just yesterday.

Just to clarify so everybody understands.

You can not place *ANY* advertising on a wordpress.com blog with these exceptions:

    - Their VIP program which starts at $500 a month: http://vip.wordpress.com/

    - Physical Product like a book that you yourself have written. You can place a single text widget in the sidebar linking to the book elsewhere. The purpose of the blog can not be for the purpose of promoting said product. (ie You can't sell arts and crafts through your blog but this allows someone like Scoble who's written a few books to sell them in his sidebar, especially since his blog was about the industry in general and not about his books.)

    - Review sites can place a single affiliate link within a review. That's a huge gray area and comes down to which employee you ask permission from but we're talking about multiple thousand word reviews of something like a CD, then you can place a link. 50 words won't cut it.

Anything else gets a no and your blog will be ToS'ed.

Reference: Former wp.com support forum moderator until I saw the light and got the hell out of there.

To be honest, if you;re trying to sell anything on your site, don;t do it at wp.com. None of their policies are written in stone and even though you have permission from one employee, another could disagree and ToS your site.

Anyone else who responds with a "I think you can" is a damn idiot. Anyone who says "install a plugin" doesn't have a clue as to what they're talking about.

Those who suggest getting a copy of the wordpress software and installing it on their own site knows what they're talking about.

edit: And just to also clarify, they will run their own advertising on your site: http://wank.wordpress.com/2008/02/26/define-broke/

If you copy paste Adsense code it wont work in wordpress.org, you need plugins on VIP account.
