No you don't. That's why I'm confused as to why you believe this.

How do you think private forums are successful? I know of a few forums that are not linked to anywhere on the Internet (at the wish of the forum's owner), aren't indexed by search engines, and are highly successful.

That is an extreme example, but in absolutely no way are SEO and marketing required to be remotely successful.

i disagree, i think forums need search engines and marketing.... lets just agree to disagree.

Id be interested in hearing how these "private forums"get successful without seo and marketing. If a forum doesnt choose to index, they still need to promote. Not indexing a forum is stupid in my humble opinon... Why would u not index your forum? Do you have any examples to prove your claim of not doin seo and marketing?

This matter is not about opinions or agreeing. It's a fact. In no way are SEO and/or marketing REQUIRED (as you state and imply) to establish, build, and maintain a successful forum.

Yes, I have plenty of examples, but it's not my place to share them with you. I believe I made it clear in my last post that the owners are specifically keeping their sites out of public view as well as indexing.

Reasons for not indexing your forum? So that you can pick and choose what type of people find your community and read its posts; avoiding members who cause issues; remaining small and cozy; the list is endless.
Now, you thinking it is stupid is an opinion. But the fact that forums don't need SEO or marketing to be successful is just that: a fact.

You can't disagree with facts, but go right ahead. :)

Maybe success to you is something different. Small and cozy to me translates into non-profitable and dead.

If you just want your buddies on your forum that's perfectly acceptable but some of us have serious monetary goals.

I do know about a couple private forums. One is big for high profile domainers but does it really make money? No it doesn't. It's there as an exclusive private invite only forum to be run by an ego maniac.

Perhaps small and cozy was the wrong terminology to use, but regardless, it doesn't necessarily translate to being dead. Users who are a part of an exclusive community are likely to be more active than on a public forum. Regarding being non-profitable: that has absolutely nothing to do with forum success. In this thread, I believe we're discussing success in terms of forum post count. Success may require money for you, but it's not a requirement for everybody and every forum.

    Right, some do. Not all.

How would you get users to your forum without SEO and/or Marketing.

Btw, as soon as you try to tell a friend or say word of mouth - its marketing. I would love to see you answer the above. :)

First one year or so progress is very slow. After that I think everything speeds up, provided we do proper marketing and management.

We have crossed the 5000 member mark today. All these little progress sure does inspire to work harder:)
