when someone says they will ping a link so it gets noticed by Google and other search engines right away, what does that mean and how do you ping a link?

thanks for any help you can give

okay, a ping is an automated service which is submitted to various blog directories around the globe informing that your blog/website has undergone some changes . for example :- you posted a post named " get free back-links " on your blog named getfreebaclinks.com and then you ping shot your blog to various blog directories, then
your post will appear in all blog directories like this --> " New posts : get free baclinks on getfreebacklinks.com" under the new posts section . this way you will likely get a backlink and when google crawls this blog directory , it crawls your back-link and indexes your post as well. this way you can ensure that your blog posts are indexed A.S.A.P .

    hope you understand :p

try using pingmyblog.com,ping shot in feedburner ( if you have a feed for your site) and many more ( search in google SE, there are thousands of free ping services)

generally ping is used for pinging blogs , i guess you can't ping websites , even though you actually succeed in doing so , there would be a minimal advantage because , Squidoo is a high profile website and google loves it, there are always bots crawling in squidoo, so there high chances of your article ( lense) getting crawled in squidoo itself. instead if you want to make your lense popular , try bookmarking the site , increases the page rank and also increases the chances of getting the lense in the top pages of google.

the same goes for all the articles

UPDATE:- just now learnt even articles can be pinged, but to almost zero advantage :( . why not start back-linking? :)

Does pinging articles give them free backlinks?

Is pinging only for blogs? Is it effective for websites?
    Thanks
