Is DMOZ really important ?

Discussion in 'ODP / DMOZ' started by Camay123, Aug 26, 2006.

    Hi,

    I have submitted my website to DMOZ almost a year ago, and my submission never got processed because their is no editors in my category.

    Now, I have continued optimizing website and I get decent SERP.

    MSN = 4
    Yahoo = 11
    Google = 13

    Would be accepted in DMOZ help my cause ?

    Thanks

    It will give you another medium PR backlink which will possibly help with your google rank a little...

    Nothing at all. Someone will make a remark along the lines of bribe an editor. Offer a bribe and site gets immediately banned forever. Accepting the site is subject to a review and only a small proportion of sites are accepted after that review. You have submitted, forget it and focus on other forms of web marketing.

    Well, It seems no one wants to be an editor for this category. This is not so true, as being in the same field has my website, I applied for becoming an editor but was refused.

    It's not so much that it's difficult to get listed, as the directory has to few editors, and has no hope of ever keeping up with the growth of the internet. Rather, its obsolescence is worsening every day.

    Think of it as a snapshot of the web, as it was, on average, 4 years ago.

    That's probably a big part of the reason why DMOZ links cannot be given the value they were once given, by search engines. Allowing DMOZ to influence SERPs would be unfair to newer and better sites. And everyone wants newer and better.

    I think since Google reduced PR importance a DMOZ listing would be less important then before.

    At least they answered you with a refusal. I applied to a category and never heard a peep.

    They were too outraged by your ineptitude. You weren't even rejection-worthy. ;)

    Yes, DMOZ is really important. You'll get 50+ backlinks since many sites copy its data and high TrustRank since search engines uses sites listed in DMOZ as a seed to generate TrustRank.

    There has been a lot of speculation that the ODP is one of the seed sites in TrustRank, but no evidence. In fact what evidence exists is against the idea. The paper on TrustRank explains that the 178 seed sites selected were firmly under the control of a body such as a government, university or corporation. The ODP is run by volunteers.

    Matt Cutts has specifically and very clearly stated that .gov and .edu sites are NOT given any special weight... or at least not because they are .gov or .edu sites.

    That's right. The problem is that Google is tight-lipped about which are the specific seed sites, or even if it is using TrustRank at all. Ignorance breeds rumour and speculation.

    For years the idea has been doing the rounds of SEO forums that Google favours .gov and .edu sites and that links from them have special weight. And of course the idea is ingrained that Google favours the ODP. So when TrustRank came along, naturally people leapt straight to the conclusion that TrustRank is based on .edu + .gov + ODP. Yet another SEO myth is formed.

    It would make sense to include a few .edu and .gov sites among the seed sites for TrustRank, but not all of them. For a start TrustRank would then become a boost for US sites.

    You are almost correct. I have it, from a reliable source, that the ODP is the one and only seed site in for a little known variable called "ArchaicRank." This variable is often associated with retired, comatose, committed, or even dead webmasters.
