Its really depend upon your services..Mean if you have web designing site then the most expensive keyword is website design newbie in this field will not acquire position of his desire at once..SO keywords like affordable website design services has much low cost and will help newbie

Long-tails would be easier to rank for, but they would also get less searches.

If you are writing about a specific cancer, that is a niche keyword, even though it is a short tail keyword.
If you are writing about popular topic, such as how to make money blogging, then better stick to long tail keywords

There is a 20/80 rule for head and longtail keywords. It states that only 20% of traffic is generated by the head keyword (something like "make money") and 80% will come from long tail keywords such as "make money internet marketing", "make money working at home" etc

here is a guide: the more the niche you are targetting is competitive, the more you should go towards longtail. With competitive I mean : is what you are promoting or providing unique or not? If its not unique, and you are providing something along with a million others, than you are in almost perfectly competitive market.

Below site for example (recently launched, still needs some work) was targetted at a very competitive industry - the social networking software industry. Rather than trying to optimize it for "social networking software", or only one product, which is like trying to optimize for a generic word like "seo", I'm optimizing it for the keywords related to specific products listed on the site. Eg, boonex is one of the products - so i'm targetting "boonex reviews"....In additional to all the other long tail keywords related to the individual products. The way I see it - the bigger the industry, the more comprehensive your site must be. The more comprehensive your site is, the easier it will be to optimize it for long tail.

If you have the great opportunity to promote a one of a kind product (it does still happen), than you don't want longtail. Than you need to get your site optimized for that one product/information.

Nowadays, people are likely search with long tailed keyword, as short keyword is too general and the competitin is too hard. So I will opt the long tailed one.

i think long keyword is better than short keyword, because long keyword is easy to promote rather than short keyword

It's still possible to find markets whose shrt tail keyword are not that competitive so before you go with the long tail go ahead and do your research and see if there are still some short tail high trafficked keywords that no one has tapped into yet if they are then go ahead and optimize for those long tail keywords

    Hi,

If you have hundred hours can be spent for backlinking jobs, you can go after short keyword.

Otherwise, better go for long-tail keyword and you will see instant result.

Try to look for phrases with less than 3000 competitions when you search the phrase in "quote".

    Cheers..
