If you purchase an upgrad copy of Windows 7 and install it on a clean hard drive you will run into license issues, even if you have a legal copy of the software you are upgrading from. The steps to resolve the issue can be found at ballyhoo4u.com Search for Windows 7 upgrade.

I don't see too many advantages with Windows 7. Why? Because Windows has been promising better "features" with each new OS and they've never come through.

Been using it for a little over a month now, and I've got only praise for it. The taskbar, though plagiarized from linux is sleek and uncluttered and the fact that you can pile windows of one type under one icon really saves space.

Everything is quick and very easy to find. UAC isn't really a problem for me anymore. Drivers get downloaded automatically from Windows Update which saves you from having to hunt around on individual manufacturer sites to download drivers which may or may not work, Win7 finds everything for you and usually the correct ones too.

Start up and shutdown is super fast, specially shutdown which happens almost instantly (seems like an instant after using Vista).

Overall, 9.5/10 for Win7, I'm glad MS finally got their act together after the disaster called Vista.

I haven't used it but heard some of the advantages as follow:
It got the ability to shift the location of the different icons in the taskbar. It also allows you to use your hardware for something other than bios post watching.

Win7 advantage runs more smoothly over vista. win 7 has that capability to reduce the size partition a hard disk without reformating the whole hard disk unlike xp..

7 is just a good looking vista. They say it is more stable, uses less battery for laptops etc but that is garbage

Step 1 Back up any info on the Hard Drive that you are installing Windows 7 on. You can either burn it to a CD or DVD or move it to an External Hard Drive or USB Thumb drive. Generally all of your info will be found in my documents. Just copy the whole folder. If you have other files or folders that you save files to such as the Desktop, just drag them over as well.
Check out the Resources section below for places you can purchase new Hard Drives, USB Thumb Drives and Windows 7.

Step 2To install Windows 7, put the Windows 7 DVD in your DVD drive and if necessary, go to your BIOS settings or Boot Menu to make your PC boot from DVD Drive. The BIOS settings can generally be accessed by hitting F8 while the PC is booting up. Some laptops have a different key to hit. Most PC's have a boot menu that you can select to have the PC boot from something other than the Hard Drive on a one time basis. Sometimes it is F12 and other times it is different. Look at the messages as your PC boots to determine which key your particular PC requires.

Step 3 When the PC asks to hit any key to boot from CD, hit the Space Bar, Enter or anything else you can get to. IT will begin the setup process. The process is greatly improved over earlier versions of Windows. You just have to answer some simple questions, select Full install as opposed to upgrade and it will do the rest. It will take anywhere between 20 and 40 minutes for it to complete the install.

Step 4 Windows 7 Desktop with some applications open.
Windows 7 Desktop with some applications open.

To complete the install, you will have to choose a User Name and Computer Name. Your user name and computer name cannot be the same. You will also be asked to create a password for your User Account although you can skip this if you choose. After this you will be asked to enter your Product Key. Your Product Key is located on a sticker on your Windows 7 box. You can also skip this because Windows 7 has a free 30 trial built in but after that you will have to Activate your copy with a Product Key. Once the Product Key is entered (or skipped) the PC will go through a final check and boot to your
