as long as the information is input correctly, and the category is selected correctly, aren't they the same?

Let me give you an example why manual is better than automatic. Up until recently my directory was free and as a result it was probably in a few automatic services database or it was included in an automatic submission software. These applications either try to map the category structure of directories or use wildcards. It seems that my directory categories were mapped wrong and I was getting a lot of misplaced submissions, for example a lot of the submissions that were meant to go to the shopping/automotive category ended up in the blogs/automotive category and to be honest if these people don't care to spend the one minute needed to submit to my directory why should I spend my time moving their submissions I just delete them.

For what it's worth, I just checked to make sure those weren't coming from us. If you're referring to the site in your sig, it's never been on our list because that script doesn't work too well with our software.

I know nothing was specifically directed at us, but I take pride in making sure that our service is not being abused to spam directory owners.

I also check the spam report threads against our submission records and would not hesitate to reprimand any member I found spamming through our service (hasn't happened yet, thankfully).

that means you will check all submitted result mannually to see whether the website is correctly into categories?
if so, it is time consuming .

"Rome wasn't Built in a Day"...

Myself I think it is to the benefit of the Webmaster to submit his site "By Himself" to Directories *One by One* and such... Yes it is very time consuming...

This way you can save yourself and the Directory Owner alot of wasted time since you know better than anyone what your site is about and whether it would fit and be an asset to that directory... Both of you will win because your not wasting his time by having to "Reject Your Site" if it doesn't belong there and your not getting some "Bad Rep" for Spamming a Directory Site that you didn't belong in in the first place...

bottom line is that as long as auto submissions are prone to errors in guessing the category structure and input fields, your site will probably get banned and reported in the forum circuit if you overdo it... :)

so better go manual - it's so cheap to get services for manual submissions nowadays... ;)

No, I only check the results when I see a spam report. So far, we haven't had any problems, so I don't think we need to constantly monitor the submissions.

I don't have to worry about the category selection because everything is hard-coded in our database. It is still up to the user to select the right category, though - our script doesn't spider the sites for keywords or anything like that.

True...but not all autosubmitters are prone to those errors. :)

Unfortunately a lot of submitters dont look at it that way...as a two way street. Im rejecting heaps of submissions right now because people dont follow the guidelines. At first i was editing the submissions, but it takes far too long to do this on a free directory. I simply dont have that kind of time to waste on people who think so little of there site, there not prepared to invest the 30 seconds it takes to do it properly. If it was paid..probably a differant story.

I think manual submissions will always be superior, but if your considering a service you pay a little more for it. Its the same old cliche, you get what you pay for....In saying that I can see a situation soon where automated services get more and more sophisticated.
