Is 25,000 competing websites too much if you are building a sniper site?

I don't think I can say too much here :p but to the snipers out there.... George recommends a certain number of competing websites but I cannot find any keywords with this ridiculously low number, I have however found many long tail phrases (profitable) that have around 25,000 competing websites. Is this figure too high to dominate the first page or get on the first page? Have you tried it and were your results still good? george calls this 'the golden rule' so I am slightly wary of breaking it, but it's so difficult....

Forget how many competing sites there are - how much experience do you have in the niche? Are you a hobbyist, a professional, do you have hands on training, or years of experience to pull from?

That 25,000 - where did you get that number from? How do you "know" there are 25,000 sites your going to be competing against?

typed the keyword in quotes and the results that were returned to me show the number of competing websites (or perhaps pages) I'm not really looking to debate whether this is correct or not just want to see how other people who have used the sniper are getting along and if they have broken the 'rule' and still done produced good results....

It is pages. Use your home page to compete with others' inner pages. You would have a greater chance of winning. but 25000? the keyword must be very longtail. :)

Yep 25,000 not precisely but therebouts. There are also quite a few paid ads running and it has a high CPC. It is pretty longtail but gets a decent amount of searches....

the real question is how strong are the pages on the first page, whats the average page rank. If its a lot of PR 2 or 3 pages thats good. If the are PR 4 or up that's to competitive

The sniper method is basically to get a site ranked with no off-page SEO factors. At least that's how George portrays it. 25,000 isn't a bad number but what it really comes down to is the competition on the first page. There are some keywords with only 5,000 results and are impossible to rank for while there's some words with 500,000 competing pages that you can rank for easily.

One example is a keyword of mine that has 370,000 competing pages when I search in quotes and I'm on the first page at number 6 and I didn't even optimize my site for this word at all. The keyword is in the URL and that's it. The keyword doesn't get many searches at all but I'm still ranking very high with 360,000 other competing pages.

    ok, thank you! :)

I did read a thread on the warrior forum where one poster said he had around 70 sniper sites and many of them were optimised for keywords that had over 40,000 competing pages!

If you think you can beat the Top 10 sites, then go for it!

I have no idea what a sniper site is, but just wanted to let you know that the number of competing pages is not a good indicator for competition :)

You really want to focus on the quality of the sites on the first page rather than the quantity of all the sites. If the top ranking sites are real authority sites with thousands of backlinks, your efforts may be better spent elsewhere. But if the top ranking listings are poorly promoted Blogger blogs, EZA articles and Squidoo hubs, you may have a good shot. Yahoo Site Explorer is your friend when you want to check a site's backlinks. :)

I use the Firefox add-on called SEO Quake. It's a really useful tool.

25,000 competitors in GOOGLE you can beat very easy with LINK WHEEL system.
Use social networks for that as well with bookmarking sites.

According to his system, less than 25,000 competing websites is recommended, but I also take other factors into consideration, for example, the pr of the top 10 results and backlinks of the top 10 results.

Usually any competition that is lower than 100k is easy to climb up to the top.

Maybe Michelle should have explained what a "sniper site" is in their first post. Because I thought you were asking a real "sniper" site - such as opening a site on firearms and sharp shooting.

That is why I posted the comment about how much experience you have.

instead of using the quotes method, why not try adding "inanchor:" before your search. This gives you a much more refined result of people that are targetting that specific KW.
As an example, lets say you were looking for results for the keyword "big fat grapes". You would go to google and type: inanchor:"big fat grapes"
This would give you your competition of sites targeting that specific KW. There is another variation using "allinanchor:"

    hope it helps

I would consider 25,000 competiting sites a gold mine. Would be very easy to get to the first page.
