How the hell can you get on the first page of google with 7 inlinks

I was doing keyword reasearch and just checking how well the sites are SEO'd on the first page of google for keywords that I'd like to optimise my website for. I found one long-tail keyword that had just over 20,000 searches a month and over 60 million results. The website appearing in 4th place on google has over 4000 inlinks so plenty of deep-linking. The website before this (3rd poisition on page one) has 7 inlinks and 7 pages according to yahoo site explorer. I've checked out the whois and it appears the domain is registered to Awesome Web Marketing LLC

How is this possible? *faints*

Can any SEO experts here shed some light on this?

I've just typed in the domain in google and it appears to be showing up on many sites so why aren't the backlinks showing up on yahoo site explorer?

Google and Yahoo always show different number of backlinks. But usually yahoo shows more. Not sure about your case.

Might be a really aged domain and has high PR and unique content? Alexa ranking might affect it too.

I think it's to do with the website page layout. I will be studying this closely and try to replicate it with unique content and see what happens. It's worth a try. :D

There's not much unique content. It's a one page sales page.

Did you check only the keywords of the mainpage or any subpages too? Maybe there could be some interesting keywords used too.

Smart people figure out that links are not the only way to rank on Google, other people don't.

Michelle, there are many, many sites with no rank at all that are on the first few pages of a search.

Search engine computers have no rhyme or reason to them. It has always been like this.

Even some of the Google staff members will say this.

And the layout, design of a page has nothing to do with it. Their computers do not go by that.

Besides, organic traffic is highly overrated, so....

    ok, thank you. :)

That guy must have been lucky to do no work and still end up on the first page for a highly competitive search phrase!

There can be other temporary reasons that are not immediately visible.
E.g. maybe the site owner has just done a paid press release for google news. Such things can really boost your rankings for a while

No search engine ever said the link counts were the actual number that is counted, nor do they reveal the quality scoring of those links.

Plus the competition for the keyword itself can have a bearing. For some terms you need only do proper onpage SEO to rank well.

    ;)
