I have just launched SalaryMap.com. The site is based on user supplied salary, income, or consulting rate data. The data is then supplied on a Google map.

Please take a minute and check out the site and fill out the survey.

Maybe you can point your boss to salarymap.com in the near future and he'll want to jump right in line with the market. ;)

I agree, you had a very good idea. I would only suggest that you had a bit more colour to make it more pleasing to the eye.

Since I was using a Google API, I opted to keep the look Googlesque. Articles about "ugly sites" was also part of my inpiration.

Salarymap.com just got mentioned on GoogleMapsMania

I have had some good feedback from an owner of a medical career site and was contacted by beyond.com about partnering. I am still looking for feedback.

    and to JRJR who said:
What huge costs we have too. The Facility Manager in Laguna Hills, California makes $60,000 but a house there cost $660,000 to $3,000,000.

The idea is cool, But when the users grow a lot, how do you intend to show them on the map? The map will be hugely congested.

First step would be to show only last 100 entries on initial loading. When a user drills down or queries more specifically there should always be less than 100 or they should be aware that certain queries (like all US or India submissions or a query for All Salaries) will be slow.

    Thanks.

Super idea ! I am in the process of utilizing the mashup concept in my own niche market that I have been involved in for the last 9 years. I REALLy feel that this method of incorporating API within varied fields will open new doors for site developers and new allinaces with major companies. My goal is to create a mashup site that will lead to a buy out someday by a major player.

How long did it take for you to make your site and get it running? How do you market your site to get people to place salaries? How do you intend on making $ with it if at all?

    Thanks

I have been working on it for a couple of months but my total time into is probably less than 50 hours. I wanted to do a mash up with Google Maps API and always liked sites like realrates.com. I do coding as my day job and do fun coding at night.

As far as monetizing goes, Adsense is there and doing OK for the thousand or so visitors I get per month. I am setting up a co-branded career section with a big job site this week. I am getting traffic from a link on Google Maps Mania and from a little bit of paid advertising (Adwords, etc).

It's funny how it's 1999 again with people thinking about building sites with an exit strategy in mind. :)

Hey IBM, I see you throwing money around, I'll let SalaryMap.com go for a few billion cash or a few billion unrestricted shares of your stock. Hurry offer expires September 1.

I think more and more people will want to limit there searches by geography and job search is a good example.

If you look at Google Maps Mania you'll see hundreds of map mash ups. Kinda fun to surf around that site if you are at all geographically inclined. :D
