Nope. I have phased away from the script. It's too slow.
However, IF I were to check for a template I would check on sharats site: www.phpld-templates.com, but I think he's only up to 3.3

    Yip. That is true.

They charge like $60+ to upgrade templates over there. So you might want to give it a try yourself first-hand prior to the ladder.

    Change scripts? :D

I remember when things like this used to be free.
Not only are there better scripts out there, but those better scripts actually offer these migrations truly free of charge.(read post 28 & 30 just 2 minutes ago)
They don;t use the baiting technique like the popular one does telling you 30, then charging you 90.

Anywho, Im sure 'someone else' will beg other people to bump and post in this thread ;) wink wink

when migrating from a service to another, most of the companies do offer free support. (look at the hosting companies for example)
It is harder to get a new client from a service he already uses, than keeping him or taking it from square one. For a company that owns a software/service (directory script in our case) giving away free support to potential new customers is probably cheaper(on the long term).

I think the "freemium" is the service that will get popular from now on. You can have a product, but when you need extra services, there is the true profit. Those addons only apply to a very limited amount of users, and, those users that are happy with X mods installed will fill up the forums, blogs, social media about you product. In this way the ones that would like to try, or have no idea what or how to customize the script, will eventually buy the basic product with no or little extra service, and probably 90% of them will never need updates or extra services because it is not needed at their level. (a directory with 5 visitors a day, with no editorial quidelines, charging like hell, etc).

I might be wrong, but help me understand your point of view :)

I think we can create a common open source script for the benefit of directory owners...(I am ready to work for it :) )

You actually did get my point of view on it. It's about the 'freemium' services.

The secondary point is that those services used to exist in what was(in our case) the popular script. However, better has come around, and not only are they better, but they do maintain the freemium integrity point of view, while the has been does not any longer.

I agree with you in that to keep people coming a service must be provided and at no additional cost. I do agree it's a better long term investment.

I guess in the overall of it, that's what happens when there is a product that others make popular and better, while the only interest is money and not involvement.
Don't get me wrong, profit is what's needed in order to stay afloat, but you also have to have your heart into it and that's something that has lacked since day one with the popular one, and seeing how everything is now pay me pay me pay me, it definitely shows.

I found nowadays fewer designers are willing to do phpld templates, especially in DP template section, almost nobody sells phpld templates
