How Long for Backlinks to Take Effect?

I'm currently optimizing a page on my blog for a decent keyword with mediocre competition. I started building backlinks two weeks back, I used Yahoo site explorer to see how strong my competitors are, the top competing page is an article from cnet.com

According to Yahoo it has over 100 links and I noticed most if not all the links pointing to that cnet article doesn't have that keyword as anchor text, and some of the links are nofollow, so I thought it would be slim picking.

However I still haven't seen any results as of yet, in fact my page is nowhere to be seen for that keyword. I have backlinks from ezinearticles, related forums, related pages, related sites and a few blog comments, I know I have more backlinks then that cnet article, Yahoo has found 85 backlinks for my page so far.

But I'm still nowhere to be seen. I'm not expecting to pop out at number one but I thought I would atleast appear in the top 20 considering the mediocre competition. Or am I just being impatient, does it take google a lot longer to notice backlinks and reshuffle the serps?

I would appreciate any tips and advice, And I will keep this thread updated with my progress.

I suggest getting a list of all the sites that you have syndicated your content (where your backlinks are)

and then going to a site like pingomatic.com and pinging each page where you have a backlink.

This way you can insure that your backlinks are actually indexed in the SEs

if you want to add even more power to your backlinks, do some bookmarking on them....

like if you had an ezine article, it's a great idea to submit it to Digg for example.

    Backlinking your backlinks :)

A lot of work, but as I said, gives them a bit more juice...

Pretty much. SEs are constantly adjusting your ranking so it just depends when the spider comes along and sees that backlink.

First to forget the difference in age between the site and the site competitor
The back links are not all equally important at Google, there are links of interest and other neglected
Moreover, the period of two weeks is never enough for a significant difference, you must wait
My advice to you: care to building unique content that Google would prefer it so much

Not all backlinks are created equal. Some backlinks that you see on Yahoo, won't help very much in SERP position on Google. Google discounts all sorts of backlinks, including, but not limited to, no follow backlinks, link exchange backlinks, links from 'bad neighborhoods', links from directories, etc.

Anywhere from 2 weeks - to never. In several forums that I have signature links, google has yet to find all of my post - and some of them are over 4 years old.

A lot of it depends on how easy the site is to crawl, how many pages google has indexed of the site,,, and other factors.

It is very hard to say exactly but only after the pages crawled and indexed by search engines where your link exist.
