It shouldn't be a problem if they both contain the same information. Sitemap.xml.gz is a compressed version of the Sitemap.xml so you don't need it if Sitemap.xml.gz and Sitemap.xml are the same. Removing Sitemap.xml.gz shouldn't have any effect if it contains the same information as Sitemap.xml.

I have always only used sitemap.xml with no problems.

You wont need both in your webmaster account so you can remove one :)

Did you use the add sitemap wizard and uploaded it. If you have done so, don't worry about these issues.

Sitemap.xml.gz is auto generated . you need to convert in to sitemap.xml and then upload it

sitemap.xml.gz is less size than sitemap.xml. It will get use if you want to upload large files, it convert large mb to small mb.

use both! but if you have very heavy website structure with a lot of internal links - use last one only!

Sitemap help crawler for indexing your pages in search engines. We can call it a table of content for search engines. Sitemap is very important for a website. If you don't create and submit a sitemap your site will not appear in SERP(Seach Engine Result Pages).

I think you can use only one sitemap not compressed and enable static GZIP compression on your web server to reduce bandwidth usage.
