i doubt its 60% i mean remember india is not only cities its villages and towns also but we can say a large number
must be around 10%. hardly anyone in the villages speaks fluent English. even in the cities, only those who have studied in good schools are able to speak English fluently.
If you are looking at the % of people, then I guess it would be under 20 but even then, the absolute number of such people would still be large... considering the huge Indian population! Regards, RightMan
"Indian English" is keeping British English and RP alive. Other (former and current) colonies of the British Empire are doing their best to destroy it. I'd like to see an English spelling bee with primary school kids from India vs Australia/UK/USA. I think "the rest of us" might get an awful shock.
British English exists very well in India. But recently with the advent of American Partnerships and Outsourcing works, Americanization has started creeping in. But i personally like British way & in my view the percent of people speaking english would be around 10 to 15 %
Most of the people are still in villages. And so there is very less percentage of people who speak fluent English. May be just around 15%. - Mr.President -
Indians percentage might be low , but in head count it is very high and don't say that less cities and more village, many village people are shinning greatly in India, Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam is from a village. I think this one great man is enough to negotiate the statement. source : http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/lan_eng_spe-language-english-speakers 1 United States: 280,000,000 # 2 India: 100,000,000 # 3 United Kingdom: 55,000,000 # 4 Canada: 17,100,000 # 5 Australia: 15,682,000 # 6 South Africa: 3,500,000 # 7 New Zealand: 3,213,000 # 8 Ireland: 2,600,000 # 9 Zimbabwe: 375,490 # 10 Singapore: 227,000 # 11 Israel: 100,000 # 12 Sri Lanka: 97,000 # 13 Puerto Rico: 82,000 # 14 Liberia: 69,000 # 15 Bermuda: 58,800 # 16 Papua New Guinea: 50,000 # 17 Zambia: 41,434 # 18 Philippines: 32,802 # 19 Guam: 28,800 # 20 Malawi: 16,000
I think India today is advancing fast and my estimate is around 40% can understand english and around 20% are fluent in English.
That is one of the reason why people often think that the level of English speaking in countries like India is close to zero, which is certainly not the case. Out of billions of people residing, you cannot make a judgement of how fluent the user is in English. Talk to the professionals working in MNC's and you will find where your English level stands at...And where our fluency stands at..
