Main domain - do you optimise it for high traffic keywords or low traffic keywords?

Im a little bit torn apart what to do.

There are keywords which I want to optimize my main domain. The question is.

If this is a new domain it will be very hard to rank high for keywords which bring high traffic because there will be a lot of competition.

Yes it would be nice to rank high for those keywords which have over 100k searches in a month. But it will be extremely hard to get on the 1st page.

So in other words you are biting on a "piece" which you can't chew.

the optimization for high traffic keywords are in vain because you will not rank high and basically will get 0.001% exposure for that keyword.

So how do you pick which keyword to optimise your main domain page?

is it good to start optimisation for a keywords which have 500+ searches but low competition instead of 100k+ and hope that one day you will be on the 1st page?

It's all about what you can do. Traffic and Rank are not just a function of keyword selection

New sites can and do rise to the top... but not based on "Optimization"... based on feeding people and search engines the content they want.

At early stage you should target long tailed keywords or sub-prime keywords. Once your site becomes aged and receives sufficient traffic then you should target prime keywords.

Well you find the competition for the keywords you want to target.....then you pick the ones with the most amount of search and the least amount of competition.

There are tools and formulas to figure out this sort of thing.

PM me if you want and i will help out.

This is pretty close to right on.
By gaining the long tail keywords you are building up authority for you main keywords.
How can you be an authority on widgets if you do not rank for blue widgets, red widgets, etc...?

I am usually targeting main page with lower competition keyword and build a sub page for very high competition keywords and do the same for long tailed. Also when link building when main keyword is well optimized or you have enough money to optimize everything at one time i get many links to that sub page with high competition keyword, so it usually has the same pr as the main page or even higher, but it takes lots of time to get it on the first page.

I optimize for low traffic keywords for my blog tech-products.info as there is a better chance of ranking up

well the thing is that my site ranks in top 50 for 110k+ searches obviously thats not enough and I started to build backlinks for that "keyword" there are other keywords like 10x less searches but 50x less competition.

Thats why I am torn apart what to do at this point.

Because I already have a lot of backlinks for that keyword which has 110k searches so not sure if re-optimising to that second keyword which has 10k searches and 50x less competition would be wise.

    What do you think?

Then you should analize your competition to know if you can outrank them. Go to the first page of Google and analize their SEO onpage and their backlinks. If they are more than PR5 forget about it because they are authorite sites and outranking there will be near impossible although you have enough money to buy backlinks.

I think that most important thing is to choose keywords revelant to the content and close to conversion if you're offering something for sale (or other goals). I think that it's more important to think what will bring us benefit rather than traffic.

Most top 10 sites for that keyword are PR3 and PR4 being the most.

Also its hard to decide what is the main objective in long term. Going for the "biggest piece of cake" probably the best approach but to get this I have to decide what to do now.

If I start working on the main keyword I will see the results probably after 6 months +

If I build backlinks for 2nd keyword which has 10x less traffic and 50x competition im pretty confident that I will be in top 5 positions within 2 months and 10000 targeted searches arnt that bad.

But what options will i have after this? Because I will not be able to rank well for the 1st keyword and keep 2nd keyword ranking.
