As long as there are SE's, SEO will never die as more people wants their site to be in top of every search engine.

A lot depends on the search engines' capabilities which are improving day by day. I guess there will be a time when manipulation of content in the web site won't have much effect on your SERP, that will be a time when SEO may die off.

I'd agree with wisdontool. SEO is totally dependent on the Search Engine's capabilities. Since they are not good enough to distinguish between natural and manipulated, Seo exists. However when the amount of AI in their algorithms reaches its peak, i guess SEO would be quite ineffective, i'll never call it dead.

The only way Search Engine Optimization will die, is if the search engines themselves die out. While the search engines are still around, there will always be the potential to optimize a site to get better results with them.

I think SEO will always be there as long as search engines are still used. Maybe just call it that will change at a later date.

I agree with this, as long as there are search engines there will be a need for optimizing a site for search engines, called as search engine optimization.

If SEO is dead, what is alive to replace? The OP didn't mention any replacement.

It was a time when one could create a site and get to the top of G and Y by just following very simple rules such as filling title, keywords, description tags and puring some keywords on the page. But now it doesn't matter if you have a PHD in SEO, you cannot get to the first page of G for thousands of competitive keywords.

If the above means that SEO is dead then it is.

But big and multimillion-dollar companies still need SEO experts to compete with other bigs over over placement.

Whilst there are search engines, websites will be required to be optimized into a condition where they can be listed. A website can contain virtually no on page SEO and can still rank, depending on inbound links and anchor text, but if anything I could see it going down the road of offpage SEO more than a combination of on and off.

I can definitely see the point thoigh, its a thought provoker.
