For a general article of 500 words, what's the average pay to get an native American to write it?

    $30?

Unfortunately, there is no average. Some American writers accept .01 per word and some charge $1.00 per word--and every space in-between is taken as well.

If you are a buyer, your best bet is to get quotes and go with the best writer that you can afford. As a writer, your best bet is to charge what you need in order to run a business, support a family and save for retirement and find buyers who can afford it.

Probably along that range. $20 to $30. College students and others would go for much less. $10 to $15.

It depends on the quality you're looking for. In this, as in anything else, you will get what you pay for.

Personally, I would not want a 500 word article that could be written for less than $100 - $150, nor would I be willing to write a 500 word article for less. In order to ensure that you're getting work that is correct in grammar and syntax, uses a broad and appropriate vocabulary, employs an appealing and germane style (and applies that style throughout with consistency) you would need someone with professional writing ability.

Some ascribe to the philosophy that quantity trumps quality and therefore try to stretch their copy writing dollar as far as possible. Others would prefer to post fewer items but keep the quality at the maximum. Whatever your approach you'll find writers willing to work at your preferred level.

Could you please elaborate as to how you get clients that pay you $100 for a 500 word article. Do you advertise your services at that rate or do you get most of your work through referrals?

So I do not take over this thread, I will give my opinion to the OP: most writers I have seen charge from $.02 per word to $.05 per word. However, some get $.20 per word or more. It is really based on your skills and your target market.

Around here collage students will write for $15-$25 and article 500-700 words and older more experienced writers will write in specialized fields for around $50.

Specialized fields as in child custody legal issues, best liability insurance for a restaurant in a leased building, how to declare non-profit status on an overseas business that shows income in the U.S.

Not.. Specialized fields as in weight loss, blog writing or your average uneducated junk advertised around DP.

I'm surprised that many writers who claim to be Native English speakers advertise their writing services here at DP for much less. WTS posts usually offer $.01 a word, and many even advertise bargains which bring down the per-word rate down to $.0095 or $.0075.

Pretty much all through referrals, and frankly I don't write for others very much. DP is not the place to market pro level writing... most folks here want the cheap stuff.

    Hello,

See content writing section. Request samples from those who charge $1 per word and those who charge $0.01 per word and you will see the difference. The best for you is one which you can afford in terms of quality and content.

    Thanks

Where do you market your services? I am looking to grow my advertising beyond DP and would appreciate any recommendations.

    Thanks.

    I earn 2-5 cents/word. I simply won't work for less than that.

Yes, articles can be had for $.03 per word but they are usually not ready for publication. You must consider time and money for an editor to review, correct, send back, and review again. If you do not have a top-notch editor your articles will not be taken as authoritative but simply link makers. Well worth it to have quality too. To have a web presence that is respected and has a high organic ranking it's a must to have excellent writers and editors.

Some times, you can get great bargains from new writers who arent conscious of the value of their articles... You'll find plenty on this site...

I think it depends on the topic. Some writers can write more than ten articles per day, and they do not mind selling away full rights for $10 each.
The fact that many writers get $3 to $5 upfront from associated content for 400 to 500 words articles show that they are not really demanding high monetary compensation for the article.
