Can someone bread down the cost and give examples of the benefits one gets for this 299.00 Yahoo wants in exchange for a listing?

Your pagerank increases and you get a lot of customers through the Yahoo! Directory.

How is it guaranteed that you'll get a lot of customers though? 300 is a lot to spend on a possibility.

You get a good backlink. You need to evaluate whether it is worth it based on your individual needs.

Deus Ex, have you ever been listed in yahoo directory?
You don't get any traffic from there as people use yahoo search and don't browse the directory.
The directory itself is only good for a quality backlink.

Yahoo directory doesn't suite all people. it is most aimed to businesses and online merchants. If yahoo directory was free you will see every bit of person here on dp submits his website to yahoo directory - making it crowded and useless. a Paid yahoo directory is especially designed not only to kick away the useless MFA/affiliate sites away, but also to attract good ongoing online business that see high value for their money (business owners are well known with 'you get what you pay for'), so if you are a small site, mainly MFA that doesn't offer any true value to the end user then sure you will say that yahoo dir' is worthless. and your website wont be even accepted.

any of these sites is not a part of the yahoo business model - they don't target such sites:
    hosting comparison sites
made for adsense full of ads sites
small noobie affiliate sites with 20 articles about health insurance

sure it will benefit people, business owners don't see $300 as a lot to risk, it's part of their business model, but i would submit and pay that only after you have an established business that makes you good sum of money

it is also a kind of a link you buy that doesn't risk you, yahoo directory is well known directory, it's the same as being listed in google directory and being panelized.

I'm confused as to whether it's worth it or not. $300 is still a lot for possibilities. I need results :)

Is it good to pick up? Yes.

Is it worth the $300? Depends.

Its all about the return on investment (ROI). If you are unable to find a better use for the money through other efforts (advertising, promotion, etc), then pull the trigger and get it. (For me personally, I've always found better uses for $300 than spending it on Yahoo.)

Well you would not want to spend $300 for only getting a quality backlink would you. I do not see any other use of the directory except that it acts as a Page Rank booster for your site since it does not provides you with minimal traffic because people use Yahoo search and very less people visit the directory

It is not worth it. Google removed the guideline which asked you to get a link from yahoo directory. besides who uses directories now? People do not even use yahoo search these days

No. There are lots of free directories available, doing a little research will yield you more than you can possibly submit to. Yahoo directory is one of the oldest and best regarded, and carries good pagerank - that said, so does DMOZ.org which is free (although expect to wait a looong time before your site is reviewed).

The benefits of spending $299 with Yahoo can easily be beaten by spending $299 worth of time (say you work at a rate of $30/hr, thats 10 hours) submitting to these "lesser" directories - in that time you could probably get around 150-200 submissions done comfortably, of which at least 75% should accept your link. Thats 100+ links for the price of 1.

As I said before and wounded elaborated.
If you consider your website as a real business you should be there.
But if you have just a few pages website and aim to earn about $5 a month then you will never get accepted there.

You'll get a boost in PR probably, but no guarentee of increased traffic.

I also read Yahoo are reducing listing fees from next year.

I'm not so sure if Yahoo Directory is worth it anymore but I will say only pay for it once. I paid only once and they left me in it after the yearly subscription expired.
