I have been trying to get my site listed in http://www.dmoz.org/Regional/Oceania/Australia/Victoria/Transportation/Limousines_and_Shuttles/ I have had no luck so far and since there are no other sites listed in that directory I thought I would volunteer as editor to get it going. No luck there either so I thought I would prompt it here and see if that helped! It would be great to get that going!
Thanks Jim, I have now read the description with suggests that my site is not meant in that category despite the category title suggesting it should. I'll resubmit in the correct category! Regards Michael
The correct category would be your locality. That'll be the one that corresponds with the street address that's presumably on your website.
Still waiting patiently but I don't think Dmoz has an editor for the category I have submitted in because there has been no movement there for at least a year!
We have over 200 editors who can edit anywhere in the directory and any editor further up that tree can edit there so there is no category without an editor. Some categories have named editors but for one reason or another it may be a long time before they edit that category. But please remember we are not a listing service, site owners and the public can suggest sites to us, but they are just that suggestions. Remember too that editors are not required to use the suggestions pool when they work on a category though many of us do check through nor are they required to do any particular task, we can, within the limits set by the directory, choose to work where we wish, so we cannot predict how long any suggestion will wait before a review, it can take from a few days to a few years.
Well, that happens with most DMOZ categories. DMOZ is too way outdated, you can see categories listing sites without changes in the last eight years or more. Even when some editors can edit categories not directly assigned to them, chances are your site will never be reviewed. If you take a look to this forum you will see some editors not even look to suggested sites. You will see people waiting for years after suggesting their sites to categories frequently updated. Since you already submitted your site, you have already wasted some time. Now, look for directories worth suggesting your site to.
One of my new years resolutions is to monitor my submission to dmoz until Jan 1 2011 at which time I will abandon all efforts. Given dmoz editors are on this site I am positive any one of them will be kind enought to let me know if my submission is rejected and why so I can fix it and resubmit unless my type of site is just unwanted. Happy New Year Everyone!
I thought that Meta Editor jimnoble provided you with some information in post #4. He said to suggest your site to the correct regional locality which is the locality displayed on your webpage. I assume that you disply your physical address on the website that you suggested? I assume that you suggested to that locality? I also assume that you read the submission guidelines, so that you can ensure that it is compliant, as you can do this yourself. This means no mirrors, related sites, unique content, etc. There are hundreds of editors that can edit here, just because one is not named, this does not mean that it does not have an editor. I can assure you that your statement about no movement for a year is totally false, many sites have been edited in the cat in the recent few months. An editor will not tell you if it has been accepted, declined or if it is still in the suggestion pool awaiting a review. You can do no more so it would be wise to simply forget about it and move on. It may or may not be included at some stage in the future. Regards.
Please, please, please don't hold your breath while you wait. You ahve been given as much information as you are likely to get, you have not even told us if you have taken Jim's good advice and snooks has told you how to do some self checking. Plenty of good starts there, unless you think we shall do the work for you, sorry, that won't happen either. Happy New Year.
