What format should I use to burn DVDs?

I've been torrenting movies lately and I get them in various formats such as .avi, .mkv, erc. I'm just wondering what format they need to be to burn them onto a DVD.

My computer has a built-in DVD burner and according software called Windows DVD Maker. I'm looking to be able to play these CDs in my Xbox 360, and I hope they'll be compatible with other DVD players as well.

Any answers or recommendations would be great, and I'd like to know a program I can use to convert said movie files.

Thanks a lot ahead of time.

Is there a free converter somewhere? I'll use .vob, it sounds like it's reliable. I looked at Nero but you can only use the "full" version for 15 days. Please let me know if there's a free one I can use to convert to .vob

    Thanks!

Hey you can burn any format on DVD.
But better you go for .vob extension.
First convert other formats to .vob and burn using NERO software & you are done.

Nero isn't free, that's the only problem. I need a free one, my burner should work fine.
