google start Google Public DNS what is main use of this more info http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/
this is similar to the opendns.com this is good for you to browse fast. some time some sites not open on your own isp dns servers. in this case you must use google dns or opendns, which works well and you can access all those sites.
Has nothing to do with purchasing a domain or hosting. It just uses Google's DNS servers for DNS lookups for the computer you are on. The main benefit would be reliability and speed vs. your ISPs DNS servers.
Open DNS is actually great if the DNS servers you get by default are very slow for some reason... I can't see the speed boost being that great though for most users because the Open DNS servers are going to be a lot more hops away than your ISP... I think the main benefit of Google's public DNS is going to be security. Open DNS came up with the idea (at least thats where I first heard it) of using DNS to block bad domains, and I have a feeling google is stealing that idea from them.
The one thing I found irritating with OpenDNS was the ads and redirection when the site was down or URL was typed wrong. The Google DNS service doesn't do that.
For you... possibly speed. For them they can redirect all misguided searches to their own properties.
Sounds like a very reliable service from Google. Do you think Google give this so they have broad access on people's activity on the internet?
So should we get a faster internet service or get the Google Public DNS? This could be a nice thing, but I would still like to hear some use experiences before I go for this.
one more tool for Google to use to track traffic. the data from the dns servers and analytics and chrome etc etc etc will help google continue shifting away from pagerank to a ranking based on actual traffic patterns. imho.
No, running a DNS server does not tell them who owns what (anyone can run a DNS server). Would be like running a web server magically telling you who owns all web sites.
Fantastic point there. I didn't even think about the effect this could have on their rankings, but PageRank can certainly use improvements. Hard to believe that something important to modern business is structured similarly to leveling up in World of Warcraft.
