Do backlinks from forums (signature) help improve your PageRank

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by blogger2006, Dec 3, 2009.

I read some contradicting ideas based on discussions made from other forums. At one instance some say that backlinks from dofollow forums (signature) help improve your PR while some say it does NOT help improve your PR but it does help in driving traffic to your site.

In some SEO books and articles I've read, backlinks from forums say it helps in improving your PR. I recently joined several forums and I’m still waiting for the Google PR update (expected early next year) before I can confirm anything.

In your experience or opinion can you please share them.

I am pretty sure it does, but not as much as you may think because there are so many links on each forum page that you only get a small amount of PR juice.

Based on my own experience if you put comments on do follow blog then it will give you one way backlink. You can check if your comments really give the backlink with many backlink checker tools on the internet

if you are advertising a britney spears blog on a programming forum, it will not help a lot. however, if the Thread or better yet, the whole forum is relevant to the site you are promoting, then it will help. forums links got stronger in the second quarter of 2009. that's why threads are now in the top 10 results of thousands of different keywords.

Thanks for all the reply, it does help to boost one’s confidence knowing that what I’m doing is on the right track.

Well, based from what I learned and on my own understanding, backlinks from forums not only fetch traffic to our website but help improve our PR as well. Although the quality of backlinks from forums don’t weigh heavily compared to other links we get from web directories, article directories, link bait, blog posts etc. "dofollow" forum signatures are still considered backlinks.

Yes it does help, especially because you are allowed to have anchored text.

They probably aren't the best way to gain link juice, but it is highly effective.

    Think about it this way:
    1. The signature link is on a PR0 page
    2. There are probably another 100 or so other links on the page to share the link juice with
    3. Do you think the search engines are going to give you credit for a few 100 signature links from the same domain (forum)?
    4. The links are easy to get, as they are self promotional and no editorially given
    5. There is software to spam forums to get a zillion signature links

In this context, if you were a search engine how much weight would you give a signature link? Nothing or next to nothing?

Signatures are good to get forum traffic to your site and nothing more UNLESS you post on a page that has high enough pr.

So you are concluding that our PR will not in anyway be affected by backlinks acquired from forum signatures?

I wouldn't put a major focus on forum links in your SEO strategy because it's pretty much common sense that it won't help you significantly. Years ago, it seemed to work well, but now...not so much.

It definitely doesn't hurt and, like others have said, will bring you some traffic. So do it. But don't put much faith in it helping your SE rankings.

I guess some link juice will pass from the forum page with high PR for all the signature links on that page. But due to the number of such links on a page it may not amount to much.

I think links from forums signature doesn't help at all.
Google is smart enough to ignore those links, and it may ban or kick you into sandbox if those links are all you have.

And, get a valueless link may decrease your pagerank.

How do you know they are helping? The search engines may list them as a backlink, but how do you know they passing any linkjuice?

Remember that recent site review that Matt Cutts did at SES in which he commented that of 100 links to the site under review, on 3 of then were actually passing any google link juice. He was using some internal Google tool to determinine that only 3 of the links were any good.
