Hi friends, I finished my new website a week ago and I'm working really hard on backlinks for the last 4 days! (about 70-100 links per day) A friend told me I should be carefull because people who get many backlinks too fast could be considered a spammer by google and get banned! I'm NOT paying for any links, I am just placing them one by one by hand in every directory and websites related to my website. Should I slow down or this is not true? How many backlinks per day is safe? Thanks for your advice.

The important thing is to make it look more naturally. If the places You're placing links in are troustworth for google, you shouldn't be affraid but in my opinion you should slow down a little bit.
I guess consistency is an important factor. If you can get 70 links consistently, then it's probably ok. If it happens to be 70 for a week, then nothing for another week, that may be a problem
The number of backlinks that you obtain daily will not be a problem. You have to consider that the sites that you're getting links from, they aren't necessarily getting crawled daily, they might not get crawled again for a week or better. Just be consistent in getting quality backlinks, not just volume. Higher quality links are worth far more than just numbers alone. Another important thing to consider when building backlinks: If you have the traffic coming to your site to support your link building efforts, you can get hundreds of thousands of links a day without incident. Google Chrome got a million links to it overnight, granted Google wouldn't penalize itself, but it shows it's possible to obtain viral links that are in far greater numbers than you could get yourself. In my opinion, with the number of sites out there, I think you could potentially obtain (in the eyes of Google) Ten Thousand links in one day, when in reality you spent a year collecting them. This is of course an extreme example, but it all goes back to how quickly the sites are crawled that you're getting links from. Quality links will get indexed faster.
Write some articles and include some links - article sites are crawled all the time and most allow you to promote your websites, blogs, products and services.
The term to describe this is LINK VELOCITY. And yes it is something anyone building links should know about.
I totally agree. I know someone who concentrated on backlinking solidly for days, then stopped. His site was taken off google for about a month. I don't think the amount of backlinks is the important thing, the quality is what decides your site ranking.
Its like speeding a car. If you usually get 4 per day, then all in a sudden you start getting 50 per day thats not natural. Its best to get quality links, not numbers.
Stop wasting your time with a bunch of links that won't do anything to bring traffic to your site. You need to get about 10 one-way backlinks from sites with a google page-rank of 4 or better, and the text you use in these backlinks is very very imporant (make sure that you use the right keywords is the text). Next post in forums and blogs which will bring traffic to your site, because it is all about traffic.
Agreed on this points and should also try to generate links by linking to relevant websites, blogs, forums, article directories so it will make your efforts work in all the better way.
two factors are important when you want to do backlinks: 1- the back links should be relevent to the site you are promoting 2-the backlinks should be have high ranks if you focus on these two you could simply get higher rank in a short time, if you want to shrotcut your way to get high rank, get my suggestion, first of all check in which keyword you want to get the best rank then check it on google with this form: intitle:"keyword" then you see how much real competitors you have, then check out his work on link building by put this link:URL you see the backlinks, then just you should have to work on those backlinks see those sites and then get those backlinks when you just get those backlinks even some more, and if your content is very good and seo friendly, then you get first rank so easily not that hard but smart.
I saw some post before that doing link building should take it slowly. But I don't believe it. All I know is keep on building relevant links. Just don't use automated software.
Truth is, if you generate 1000 links in 3 hours from ONLY Blogger blogs raise a red flag in the search engines eyes. It takes some black hat voodoo to make that happen, and the search engines know it. - Shoba

Is this really true? Did google let them know this was the reason... surely this person was doing other things to get banned as well.
I personally never go over 50 links per day just to be safe. Google penalties can hurt a business so much it's just not worth it.
