Bounce rate?

Discussion in 'Google Analytics' started by Apple.Summers, Dec 1, 2009.

I launched my blog a few weeks ago and I had a bounce rate in the 80's. A week or so later it's dropped down to 5-7% and won't go higher than that. I look at daily blog rates and it stays around 2-5. The lower the bounce rate the better, right?

    Regards,
    Summers.

two ways to look at it
lower=better, means more people are reading your content and checking your pages
higher=better, if those bounce backs are clicking on your ad, affiliate links, or optin page

Plenty of people here have said that the lower the bounce rate the better but I noticed that none of them have actually explained what a bounce rate is (clearly OP doesn't know it) so I'll give it a shot: :)

Bouch rate is the percentage of people going to your website and then leaving immediately after seeing your main page, i.e. they don't click through to any of your subpages. Note that, as BoYgAB90 said, at times a high bounce rate can be extremely good, such as in case your main page has ad units and people click on those ads as opposed to links to your sub-pages.

i just looked at bounce rates of all my sites.

most of the sites have a range of 70%-80%.

the sites that have low bounce rates are the ones that get a lot of type-in (repeat) traffic.

    in other words,

the sites that get less % or traffic from search engines, have a lower bounce rate.

35% is the best that i have.

70-80% is an awfully high number. Have you done proper keyword optimization? An 80% bounce rate implies that you rank for the wrong keywords and therefore people who find your site from SEs aren't actually interested in the content and keep surfing.

You must be getting something right its fantastic to have that kind of bounce rate. We are in the sub 40's we are trying with new contents though.

Yes! Lower bounce rate means visitors like your site and stay longer to read.

Yes the lower the bounce rate the better just like everyone else has said. Unless of course you are getting great click through on your ads. I mean if you have google adsense ads

My bounce rates seem to be in the 20%-50% range. Really seems to vary from week to week in between there.

Yeah surely bounce rate of this range is very rare. How you are able to get such a good bounce rate. Would you be interested in sharing your thoughts over it

Lesser the bounce rate = higher the time on your site.

its a positive indication for your site. Good luck

A bounce is not necessarily a bad thing - the landing page could serve its purpose and the a person could call you or email you without leaving the page (if you have clear calls to action).

Exactly. But this theory only makes sense when the visitor is landing directly on the landing page where he can find all relevant information like a blog post.
