What is Link Farm

I am new to SEO please guide me in easy way what is link farm?

in simple terms, a farm is a place one grows crops of food.
Thus a link farm is a site that's main job is to provide links for other sites.
They are not liked by most search engines at all.

So the directories are also link farm ? because they provide link to other sites.

I am confused

 

I do not think directory is a link farm as I understood according to master-yoda's text. The text says that each site in the group links to every site in that group. It means that if there are 10 sites in a link farm. each site will link to the 9 other site. That is what I understood. By the way me too new to seo. Correct me if I am wrong

 

it seems to me that link farms are/are going to be on the black list of the search engines?

Link Farms are a network of blogs and websites created for the sole purpose of linking back to your site(think 100s or thousands). They use to work in the early days but now search engines caught on and devalue links from sites created by individual users. People have adjusted to this problem and increased their rankings by making link farms more natural by building sites with different class c ips, and utilizing other web2.0 properties and wordpress sites to build a subpage to link back to your site.

You may not be agree with my kind of definition of a "LINK FARM" , but this is one what I think is thumbs rule. A website or a web page containing more than 80 live links, is considered as a link farm.Association with that kind of websites are strictly forbiden in the field of SEO. Any discrimination of this fact is warmly welcomed.THX.

But technically speaking this can't apply to directories. Goggle even started their own link directory! directory.google.com

Web Directory will be different. Separate category as a regulation. And a few links out. Unlike link farms.

so why do they exsist ? surly any linked page will be "put down" by google ?

 

Most likely to make money off people who don't know it won't help.
