Renting a Web Site - Can you do it? Where do you find the renters?

My domain MovieElf.com might have promise even though the name is a bit goofy. I don't want to sell it. I was wondering if I could rent it somewhere?

Perhaps if I developed it then I could rent it. But perhaps they could develop it and just pay me for the domain rental.

No one would be willing to rent a site which is complete. The other way to attempt to do anything like that is to just hire a Manager to handle the responsibilies of the site for a profit/share of wage.

Another thing about your site. There's no promise on just a domain alone. It has to be established to have a value to it by either PR, traffic, backlinks, etc.

I dont think anybody would like to jump into a trouble like this. This just would put the renter in risk of getting kicked off as soon as they make it popular.

Totally different. If you were to say it's like "nobody would rent a house that they have to renovate then get kicked out" then I'd say yeah, but its different.

People rent homes for an equal trade, but the value of a business increases too far up in a short amount of time.

You cannot do this, seriously. You can only just hire someone.

Those stats are meaningless, unless your domain ranks for the keyword "movie".

Just because a bot tells you what your domain is worth doesn't make it worth it. I have several domain names that bots have valued in the millions of dollars, but I know I would never get that much if I tried to sell them.

And as kgrad posted, those stats are meaningless. Just because 'movie' is a high volume search term doesn't make a domain with said keyword valuable. You get the site to outrank imdb.com and wikipedia.com and then you can start talking about how much it's worth.

Nobody would be dumb enough to rent a domain. There's nothing to stop you from kicking them off the site once it's making a lot of money.

Many local businesses do rent websites. The owner of the site sets it up for them. Sites like SeattleDentist.com have been purposely purchased and developed just for this kind of thing by sharp entrepreneurs. Most of these entrepreneurs even have their own local directory sites. When the dentist who's renting it, no longer wants it, it's pretty easy to find another.

Though there is a lot of people who rent house's only do it because a lot may no that the market value may increase and that's when they sell them. it happens a lot. most will just kick you out saying they are going to be doing a lot of work etc etc...but 2-4 weeks later you see it on the market.

Why would you want to rent a site? It takes so much work to promote/market and the effects are often not seen until much later. Makes more sense to buy - its not like domains are terribly expensive.
