Also backlinks to your secondary pages is a great way to do it. If your inner pages have page rank it will only help your main index page gain authority as well.

You could also put links in your signature. It is a good easy to get some links started and is good for new sites but I do not recommend that you depend on it.

Yeah...it seems as if relevant backlinks are the only way to go. If you have a bit of time on your hands...have a go at doing some link wheels.

Quality back links and visitors per day matter the most in case of PR.

The more links you have, the better you will be. But build links on sites with similar content to yours, and than you will get backlinks and more traffic.

Getting your site on the first page of Google begins with properly optimizing your site with your chosen keyword.

The next most important factor is back links, if you miss this part then you are going to kiss goodbye to having your site on the first page of google.

There are numerous ways you can build back links (free & Paid). But Google prefers you build your link slowly, lets say not more than 100 link a week.

Below are the few ways to get back link.

Article marketing- use your link at the resource area.

Forum - add your link to the signature and every post you make will be building your site.

Blogging - every blog post creates a fresh page on your site. Which is very relevant to achieve a goog search engine ranking.

Blog commenting - comment on peoples blogs.

Directories - submit your site to directories.

Online classified - post a classified and use your link.

There are still more ways you can use to get quality back link, you can do more research.

I think that age of a site is very important for certain websites, too.

In the trade I'm in, there is one website that is among the oldest, with very few backlinks, and those are so-so at best.

It had a PR5 and now a PR 4 which is actually very good for our work. PR 5 is virtually the highest I've ever seen for landscape or arborist websites.

The one site I mentioned, is one of the older ones on the internet.

you should listen to what johnben1444 had to say, I have done most of those techniques each day and it has helped my page rank go up. It is important to do them daily or in the case of articles weekly.
I think that getting your site indexed by google really helps - you should sign up to google webmaster tools there is lots of things that will help you find any issues and help google index your site.

One of the factors that affect PR (page rank) is the number of back links that you are getting. In order to create back links, engaging on the techniques like blog commenting, social bookmarking and networking, classified ads, press release, online groups and link exchange helps.

Pagerank is all for backlink so that means that you need to gather more backlinks. It's better if yoou can get backlinks from sites with high pr already.

Focus on your content, some high PR sites would also try to link to you if they see that you have good contents.

    Hi, Mountainfitter

I think SERP would be more profitable than PR.
If you want to increase your PR, you need more niche-relative and dofollow backlinks from higher PR sources using your keywords in anchor text. :)
Of course, these would also help in your SERP for targeted keywords.

    Have a nice day,

the more backlinks of high PR sites you have the more your site PR will be, site age is sure a factor, but majorly backlinks matters, try getting some authority sites backlinks.
