When you write a controversial or interesting blog post, it tends to generate a lot of interest and a lot of blog comments. Which is great and the whole point of a blog. But is there a point when you should stop accepting blog comments? I think 50 comments is a nice number to stop accepting them for a post, anymore then that and the page becomes really bloated. Thoughts?
In my oppinion I don't think there is any harm in not limiting the number of comments, providing they are all contributing and meaningful comments. Especially if you have published an interesting post, I think it's important to allow users to discuss the content and contribute towards the blog with valueable comments. If the page becomes bloated you could always install a paged comment plugin. For example - http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/paged-comments/). Obviously, if you allow do-follow links and comments start to become suspiciously spam-like, then I would say it would be necessary to close comments.
I personally think 20 comments per page would be suffecient (similar to the replies per page on this forum). Any less and users would be forced to hunt through pages to read all the comments, and anymore then you risk having too many internal and external links on your page.
