I look at the cost to benefit ratio, for example web design, I looked at the number of sites i might be designing vs the cost to have them done for me vs time it'll take me to learn how to do it myself.

Result, I learned how to design, (programming would have taken much longer so i kept that part to outsourcing).

That's exactly what I have done today! I reached the little goals I had and set new ones! It feels actually good to achieve them. :)

Write down your goals and reasons for working towards them. Tape them on your wall, computer or bathroom mirror. Then you’ll be reminded throughout the day and it becomes easier to stay on track and stay focused.

I set myself some very big goals at the end of each year so that when the new year comes i start working on them straight away, over the last 3 years after i was made redundant i wanted to setup my own business this i have achieved but at a very high price it cost me personally well over $100k and i mean well over and at one time i almost lost my marriage of 28 years but we have come through it and we are finally enjoying the pay back of all the hard work.
Keeping your self focused and motivated is easy to plan in your mind but very hard to actually carry out in real life.

Congratulations for coming through and not giving up! So glad your marriage made it too. That's VERY important.
What you write gives me courage to go on and not give up! If others make it, why not me too?

To become and stay motivated, it's important that the goal be something that you perceive to be valuable. A worthwhile goal will act as a continual "gravitational pull" on you to keep at it.

For example, some years ago, when I was 60 years old, my wife suggested that I begin a website to contain the work of my 30+ years of ministry as a pastor and Bible college teacher. I knew nothing about web design. But the worthiness of the goal (at least in my mind :)), gave me the motivation to start the brand-new learning curve.

The result? Five years later, that website — signature link #2 — receives 75,000 unique visitors a month.

In sum, a worthy goal, as determined by you, is a strong motivator.

I am impressed! To learn that at sixty! Well done!
I am not quite 60 yet :) which motivates me - if you can do it, I can!
    Thanks a lot for sharing!
