    Hi,
Is anyone at DMOZ tracking how many Editors there are at a given time and how many categories do not have volunteers for them?

Does anyone know how many of these unvolunteerded categories are being viewed by other editors each day?

Wether the category has a named editor or not, many editors can edit in there. There isnt always a named editor because this often results in new editors not applying for that cat because they think that they cant edit there because it has a named editor.

Statistics are kept on almost everything but I would think only people that need to know, would be provided such detailed information.

It is also true to say any editor who works further up the tree has responsibility for all the sub categories below where their name appears and often editors work their way up a tree taking more responsibility but with a real knowledge of what is happening in the sub categories. Also ofcourse editors as they gather more sites create new sub categories to make the category more user friendly to the surfer. These do not carry the editor's name who created them usually in the hope, as spooks says, of new editors offering to edit there.

Also don't forget that we have over 200 editors who can edit in any category.

I think statistics could be compiled to show which categories are not being edited and to some extent they are because when a category seems to be being neglected we often have threads in our internal forums listing where help would be appreciated. But in the end the directory works on the idea that editors can only edit where they have been given permission, no one can force any editor to do particular work in those areas or to apply for new permissions to extend the areas that they work in. Sometimes editors want to get on and get more and more responsibility, but we have editors who look after their little area because they have a real interest in that area and they would not dream of wanting to do more. Both types make up the fantastic team that we have. One quality, unique content site correctly located, titled, described and added to the directory is one more that we did not have before and when that is in a particular niche from an editor with expertise in that area, that's great. It's also great when an editor spends hours working behind the scenes on new editor tools or checking when sites have gone 404. Any and all work done is valued.

has permissions for might be a better phrase. I certainly don't feel personally responsible for every one of our 4 million plus listings :).

Long story short, you editors don't have idea, do you? How is it possible place a reply too way off-topic to such a simple question?

Let's see. InsightReiki asked how many categories are not being reviewed regularly. snooks copy-pasted the answer editors give when someone asks what happens with categories with no named editor on them. Then anonymously does the same but he uses ten lines more. In the end we get no answer so far.
When reading the thread I though Jim was about to throw some light over the subject. But he posted to reprehend a supposed editor for the vocabulary used. Something very much like the queue-pile-pool thing. Since they have to be very careful with the words they used. They can bury their selves easily.

I think this is what we get when asking for something the guidelines don't talk about.

And I thought you did Jim:rolleyes:

Sorry slip of the finger, you are absolutely right. I have to say it felt like that when I had a couple of categories, but you are right as an editall, it is a bit big for any one of us:D
