Yes. This forum uses what is called "DoFollow signature links" so yes, putting a link in their signature does help them rank in the search engines.
Well, the signature values depend upon the thread value. If the thread has some PR, then signature is also valuable. But zero PR thread also contribute to backlinks. so everything is important.

exactly, if we have the backlink as such a great site as digitalpoint, we will have some improvement in the ranking with the search engines. but dont forgot every thing will not happen in a night , just do it as you like and participate actively and dont think about the spamming plz...
Using your site link as signature here gets you both backlinks and maybe PR since this forum is do-follow.
