Howdy folks. I've just launched a new experiment site. It's called one million hit wonder The aim: to get 1 million visitors to the site in 1 week. Is it an unachievable goal? We'll find out..... As a secondary component, I've also offered the opportunity to pay for a single advertising slot on the site. After all, if I get to one million hits, why not let someone benefit from all of this traffic. The advertising also has some additional 'fun' elements. Firstly, you get to bid for a 7 day advertising slot on eBay, rather than simply purchase it. Secondly, if you are the current advertiser when the site hits one million visitors, you get 3 months of free advertising....which is HUGE, when you think about the traffic volumes! Have a look, and let me know your thoughts. If you're keen to advertise, feel free to bid on the ebay auction - there's a link to it from the home page. OneMillionHitWonder.com
Although I like this idea, but I think it will be so difficult to get a million hit without a content at all.
I agree in principle. That is why the blog section is there, so I can frequently update visitors on my thoughts and progress. But to be honest, I thought that the statistical content, and the ebay auction, would be enough to keep people interested. Is this not the case? If so, what content would you put into the site, to make people keep coming back?
That's right, high PR is going to be essential, which means I will need the major websites of the world linking to this site eventually....
i am thinking that i might bid.. what niches are allowed and not allowed? Great Idea.. really unique..
Thanks mate, I appreciate the kind words. If you have any honest feedback about improving the site, or making it more 'viral' so that you will forward to your friends or colleagues, please let me know. I am not too fussy with the niches that advertise at this point (unless, of course, if the content is totally inappropriate to the public eye!) I'd love to see you bid, as I'm really curious to see if this will even get off the ground!
I woke up this morning, and found that I have had 296 Unique Visitors within less than 24 hours. And to be honest, I haven't really been marketing this much at all as yet.... Don't believe me - have a look at the live stats on the home page: onemillionhitwonder.com Soooo....is anyone interested in advertising on the home page of One Million Hit Wonder next week? It seems like a no-brainer to me - risk 99cents to advertise your brand to potentially thousands of unique visitors.
Thanks guys, I really appreciate the kind words! Abbas: The site is SEO optimized, so as time moves on this will assist, but in the short term, I think the main traffic source will be viral from people passing the site onto their friends via email, twitter, and facebook. The advertising slot for next week is still going super cheap. If the current trends are any indication, next week there will be around 2,100 unique visitors, and the advertising slot is going for just $1.40 on the ebay auction. If you have a site that you want to get a bit of exposure for, why not try risking just $1 or 2 - it might be the best investment you ever make! Here's the link to the One Million Hit Wonder eBay auction for next week's advertising slot.
I know. I don't like to set myself challenges that are too easy! Any suggestions on how to make it happen, are appreciated!
Well, yesterday I received 342 visitors, without any aggressive marketing tactics whatsoever, so I'm off to a good start!
