The user above me seems to be more experienced than me, so I shouldn't say this... but I think you should try to copy the Google AdSense-code and paste it into a blog post just to test it. I think that should work, but I'm not sure... I only use the self-hosted version.

You can not place *ANY* advertisement on a standard wordpress.com blog. There are some exceptions to that rule (ie their $600 a month VIP program, advertising an actual written on paper book that you yourself have written and published, an affiliate link for an actual CD or album that you have written a full and complete review for [ie over a thousand words], etc.) but 99.9% of the time, the answer is no.

To be honest though, even if you were doing that and even if you had the OK from a staff member, I still wouldn't be doing that on a wp.com blog. Staff has been known to change their minds on calls like that and even if you have it in writing, it's still at their whim and you could find yourself closed down at any time.

Reference: Former wp.com support forum moderator.

    Their written "policy":

You can't placed any ads on your wordpress.com blog. But you can placed any banner with these tags
    <img> and <a href="#">
    Code (markup):
    Tested but not proven :D
Anyway,, Wordpress.com didn't allow you to placed any referral links such as MLM companies, sites, or programs and any other affiliate link on my blog. If you do that, Wordpress will suspend your blog..

If you;re caught or if someone reports you of course. While they brag about their anti spam policy, if you read the fine print of their "press releases" and announcements, the number they usually brag about is automated splogs that have gotten caught by their automated filters.

I spent a weekend as a test a few years back and reported over 600 splogs I had found with a simple keyword search in google. Only 3 have been removed to this day.
