Question from a noob.

Discussion in 'Directories' started by gijack24, Aug 21, 2006.

I've always wanted to start a website and a directory seemed like a good way to start. You know, get my feet wet and get the hang of it. I don't plan on making money or anything, I really just want to do this as a hobby.

My question is, can someone direct me to a previous discussion about this or give me some guidance about where to start. I already have an idea of what kind of directory I want, but just not sure where to start.

    Thanks in advance.

hard to find people who are interested to work on directories as a hobby. Here are some of the tips to help you.

    1. Decide on whether you will go for general or niche. General directories attract visitors from different areas, but it will give you lot of work. be prepared to spend good time if you go for general. on the other hand, niche should be interesting and easy to work with.
    2. Start with the readymade directory script like phpld or site-sift script to install on your webhost.
    3. Build your directory by adding as many sites possible for you with necessary categories. Post your directory on announcements in DP and you will get some nice submissions to fillup your directory.
    4. As time progresses, you will get PR and some natural visitors who will pay for your site. Keep free submissions open along with paid submissions. You will get few paid submissions that should support your bills and expenses.

In due course of time your directory will find place with one of the best ones. Good luck.

Thanks guys. Both replies where very helpful. I'll be definately going for the niche.

One more question. Does godaddy have already made templates or can I add my own script for that. Also which plan for godaddy would be the best for a directory.

People are avoiding dynamic page directories as they are kind of link farms and nothing else. If gijack24, making a Directory is really like a hobby to you, make a full html directory, which will bring you more submissions and even more paid submissions beacuse of this unique feature.

That's absolutely untrue. All the best directories are dynamic and generated from a database. Please get your facts straight before misguiding someone who interested in starting a directory.
