expiring domain name, good or bad?

Hi. I was doing some research for a site that I'm developing and I found a great domain in the same niche that has expired. I'm a frequent reader of SEO blogs such as shoemoney;) and from what I understand the older the domain name is the better it will rank will google. The domain I backordered was registered for a couple of years now, has expired this month and will be available in a couple of weeks. It also has some great backlinks. If I'll eventually own this domain will it be considered a fresh domain or will the history and backlinks count?

A new registration date is set for the domain as it's expired.

If domain fits your area it may be better than new one you can find regardless of any carry over benefit it might possibly have. I doubt in carry over punch.

What I am saying is domain age bears no weight if the domain gets dropped. It acts as a new registration.

Don't bother buying an expired Domain Name because of its PR rating because it would be resetted to PR0 during the next PR updates. I've made the mistake of paying a little more than I should for some expired domain names at TDNAM.

Basically, getting a domain name because it is relevant to your needs makes more sense.

Yes, an expired domain is worthless as far as PR rating or SEO are concerned.

If you get them before they expire then it would definitely be worth something

If you happen to buy one that has never been parked and has links, what quick push do you get? About 90 links for each of the big 3. Any estimate of added value?

I realize the spider trip will show different stuff on the next visit.

    Thanks everyone for your answers.
This domain was owned by a respectable physicians association, a real authority in their branch. Most links pointing to the url have the association’s name in the url. I've used the Page Strength Tool on seomoz.org and the report showed 101 links from edu domains and 3 links from gov domains. Anyone know how accurate this tool is?
There’s a also a link to the url in dmoz but I'd like to change the anchor and description, (is there a chance I can do this?)
I expect links to change & rankings to fall, but I would try to give it a go… just as an experiment at least.

One more thing.. What do you guys think about snapnames.com?

The Seomoz tool is very good and I must say you should buy that domain name and retain the content from what you can extract from archive.org, also dont worry about the PR or anything, those .edu and .gov links will make up for everything.

Give it a go, I dont think it will give you any good results as far as PR or SEO is concerned, but just for the sake of backlinks, give it a try

Aren't backlinks an important element in SEO?

About retaining the content... it's protected by copyright but I'm going to add my own content relevant to what the site used to be about.

Most page names and maybe the titles can be reused or at least re-directed to your current content.

This isn't necessarily true - I bought an expired PR3 .com domain a couple years ago; and parked it for about a year before putting some crappy content on it in the hopes of getting a little more income with Adsense than the parking page. It never lost the PR3, even when it was parked...

If it still have some ACTIVE backlinks, you might enjoy some traffic for few days or months and as you said it is from same niche, you might also earn some good revenue as well
