I would like to know the top keywords used by the users in their search term to register a domain name. i.e. (the most obvious search term) domain registration. How would i know the other keywords used?

There are a number of tools for that. One easy way is make a Google query, and what Google does is at the bottom of the page, they will put some "related" keywords. These are related as per Google, hence strong.

I like the G external tool and use it, but it just can not tell you how many people are competing for those words.

It gives you an idea of how many people are advertising on your keyphrase in Google.

If you want to get an idea of how many people are optimized on that keyphrase (key phrase in the title tag) then you ca nuse SEMRush.com

There is a simple answer to your problem. If you want to know how many competitors does your keyword has you simple search it on google with this format: "keyword" do not forget the double quote, this will tell the search engine to only display the results exactly as what is your search term is. And the number of results will be the competitors of that keywords.

Google Keyword suggestion tool is best for this purpose. I can find out how much traffic volume on your particular keywords. however you can use wordtracker and semrush also.
