Another Yahoo! Service to close soon

This time it's Yahoo! Go a Yahoo! Services apps for cellphone
    http://www.larkins.org/news/yahoo-go-to-close-down.html

It was a cool service easy to use. And now they close it and expect us to use a really crappy mobile web page.

Remember Geocities? It was a part of Internets heritage. I made my first web pages on them and now they are all gone. Idiots. I can't say it enough guys at Yahoo! are idiots. Yahoo! would have done so many things with Geocities. When I heard Yahoo! put an end to Geocities I really wondered if someone would have bought Yahoo! immediately.

I don't get it why Yahoo! can't atleast sell the services it doesn't want. Are they too proud to do so??

May be they will revive it when time is favorable once again. But a cell phone app in the market with things like iphone, smart phone and blackberry, palm pre, treo, nokia Nx tablets, android, etc. has little market share, thats why they are doing this, to cut down on unnecessary resources and the deploy of the resources in profitable areas. I think its called lean management.

Come on Geocities had lot of chances of making money, they just had to be creative.

I am sure there would be some way to make money in everything Why not Yahoo! Go too.

If you are a Yahoo! Go user, you get a notification in email.

Yahoo can't really sell their site to anyone. Most web entrepreneurs when they make site hope that some day it'll be bought by one of the internet giants like google or yahoo or aol etc. Those companies leverage their infrastructure and business contacts to derive profits out of the sites they buy (other than the sites that are bought only to keep the competition out). But, if Yahoo is unable to make a site profitable and probably they don't expect it to be profitable within a reasonable time frame, I think there are very few other companies that can. There could be a few (maybe google or microsoft) that might be able to derive some value out of a particular site but, I guess yahoo would rather not give them the competitive advantage for the sake of a few million bucks. So, shutting the site down till they see better profit potential is a sensible choice I think.

Yahoo! might be trimming down some services that has high cost but low revenue such as the Yahoo! Geocities services. They were not able to earn from it.
