back links to language sites

Hi Guys,

I have one confusion , please give you opinions to help me solve this.

I have few language sites and i am not able to find back links from respective language sites
Is it going to harm my rankings in long term if i take back links from english sites to language site.

I did it for one of my german site and lost my rankings but i am not sure if it was due to taking links on english sites

It does not matter site is in which language what is more important is the quality of link, the link should be from a site which is about the subject your site is also about & would be able to pass on some value from the link back to your site
