Is it bad to make up Customer Testimonials? After A LOT of people saying to change my website ( recipes with love .com ) I'm going to do it. I've been looking at a lot of sales pages and most have customer testimonials. My members haven't told me anything. Would be be ok if I made some up? Or is that just sneaky business? Are all those testimonials on sales pages real?

    Thanks!

I really don't think that making up your own testimonials is right. Why not contact your current or past customers with a survey instead?

    Faking testimonials is down-right unethical!

Plus, the FTC is REALLY starting to crack down on testimonials. Do a search for "FTC Testimonials", and you can read the news for yourself.

Some marketers are considering dropping testimonials all-together from their copy.

I don't think we should stop using testimonials, but I do STRONGLY feel that if you use testimonials, you better be able to be back them up with some kind of proof.

Try out Linkreferral.com. You can actually put the reviews your site gets onto your front page.

The FCC are starting to regulate the "customer testimonials" so that you would have to prove that they are real. If not, you can get shut down. That's just the worst case scenario though. I would recommend getting REAL customer testimonials.

Try giving out a few review copies and getting reviews from them. It's not that difficult :)

Hi .. i think the first thing you should do is advertise your business more. although there are things like " white lies" still it is better if your testimonials are true and from satisfied customers. try to use more marketing tools and techniques to gain more followers. then that's the time you can ask for feedbacks. good luck :)

Well, of course, it is unethical and probably illegal too.

I won't advice doing it. Instead run a survey amongst your past customers and let them give their opinions.

IMHO testimonials are worthless anyway. They don't add any crediblity. Personally, I always assume they're made up anyway.
