does google recognise the position of text?

ive been having this debate with some colleagues and we were wondering whether google recognises where on a page text is??

 

According to me google can recognize the position of text on a page .....

 

Google recognizes the position of text, but this is relative to other text on the page i.e. the position of text won't matter if there's no other text on the page, I think.

How? Can you provide an analysis of an html page and tell us how each code determine position of text?

I would appreciate if someone could provide a more technical detail about it. I'm having debate in my mind about this too.
