I'm ranked at number one for a few keywords that are very popular (I won't say which ones at the moment) The question is, what do I do to maintain my site at number one? Do I have to keep purchasing links or what, specifically? I'm just curious..thanks guys!
You don't have to purchase links - just link back to your site with backlinks from Ezines, social bookmarking sites, and website directories. Also create unique content for new pages.

If you were ranking no.1 for 'left-handed golf clubs for people in Swindon' then you would probably be ok just distributing articles...etc. However, if you were ranking no.1 for 'Car Insurance', unfortunately the ONLY way to stay at the top is to buy links (and lots of them), just like everyone else in the top 10 for that term.

Try increasing the keywords in the meta tags within your page. If you do not have meta tags in your page, I recommend adding some, and keep submitting your website to several search engines.
Keep doing whatever you were doing to reach that coveted spot! Look at the competition around you, see what they are doing. Write articles, comment on blogs, continue to build links to your site, and update your content occasionally. It takes work to retain number one, but you can do it!
