Has anyone ever been penalized for buying links? Has anyone noticed an improvement from buying links?

Yes i saw penalty for buying links and improvement from buying links. BUT it is quite impossible to get a penalty by buying links if you are doing it via private conversation.

I dont know how they do it, but Google is pretty good at catching link sales. Maybe the unusual link pattern or something. I have had 4 of my sites penalized. Completely dropped off from the SERP's.

@Dynamikemagic Have you been penalised yourself for selling links if you don't mind me asking? Just about everyone sellings links or drive traffic through link ads - including the big G.

That said, if you are looking to do it, be sure to ply your trade in private.

    Good luck

How can you possibly get penalised for buying links, as google wouldnt even know for sure if a link was bought or not, also a competator could buy a link in an attempt to get you penalised !!

However selling text links on ur website is a different matter !

You actually can get penalized if they classify it as "buying links"

I'm not sure how it happens exactly or how they prevent competitors from screwing you over, but I know that they can determine in some cases that you are buying.

No, I never sold links before. Link selling is something I am not interested in. But I do want to improve the SEO on my website. I was thinking about buying links. But I have heard individuals can be penalized for buying links. The reason I started this thread is to find out if it "penalization" is true or a rumor.

I am not sure, but I think when an individual buys a link from a link selling software, it leaves a tail/signature of the seller's link next to the buyer's. If I am correct, the reason the seller wants to add their tail/signature to the buyers is because it will help improve their SEO too.

But if a link building software would only leave your own website link without adding anything extra dealing with own, it might make it impossible for Google to notice.

Remember, that is only my opinion.

scary stuff - haven't gotten penalized yet, but it's kinda crazy to think it can happen so easy with no way to fix it :\

They are zillions of paid directories selling links.
    Are they banned?
Are sites on these directories banned?
Isn't Google main business to sell links?

Google claims there is nothing a competitor can do to harm you ranking.
