    What are you selling?
You need to find what is being searched more:
    Brand or Product Name
You need to come up with a universal strategy for your site or you can break it down to categories.
    Naming convention can be {Brand} {Product_Name} {P/N or SKU} or {Product_Name} {Brand} {P/N or SKU}

You'll need your landing pages to be well thought out and optimized.
As "smindsrt" said, you'll need quality links pointing to your site.
You'll need to figure out where you want the links to point to.
Just make sure it's relevant to the page it is going to.
Make sure you have a sitemap.xml that is generated everytime a page is created.
Use Social Media to your advantage.

    Just some basics for you.
    Good Luck

    My suggestion is
Firstly you go for on-page optimization. & Secondly you go for off page optimization.

Which program are you using for your ecommerce site? Because there are certain seo plugins for certain programs.

First, URL naming you need to do work on..you should have your targeted keywords (obviously means your product name) in the URL.

Different Title and META Description tag will also be useful in terms of SERPs.

Do link building with different anchor texts for your site. You can also use social bookmarking and social networks.

    Don't confuse about on-page and off-page optimization.
    - On page means appropriate management of the element of webpage.
    - Off page means relate with links coming from other web site to your website

Detail would be very long, If any need details please PM me, I will assist to the best of my knowledge.

Bar far, the most important thing you need to do, even before you start on page optimization, is key phrase analysis and selection. Selecting the wrong keyphrases is what kills 99.9% of all online businesses.

Here's an article that might help.
How to select your keywords and key phrases

SEO is a process; NOT an event. That means that it happens over time. There is no instant remedy and no sure-fire way to guarantee success.

You start out doing the basics. Get your site registered with search engines (mainly Google req. registration, others don't. The big 3-4 major search engines matter. Don't pay for ANY listings in search, they come naturally over time.)

The Internet is data. Ones and zeros basically. Text is read well by search engines and graphics/images and mp3's or videos are generally not unless you add an anchor link or text to define what it is. Articles that are relevant to the topic or theme (not graphic theme, but the idea of the site) are what gets cached (or kept on file) by the search engines. More is better and more is better. How well you connect the dots (ones and zeros/text) to other relevant sites and them returning that reference is part of it. Not the whole thing, but really important.

It is a lot of work and time involved. Getting listed is first on the agenda. Then you have to have something worth listing and the more it changes the better. Static content does not get listed well unless it is really unique. The more it changes, the more chances you have to get listed for some odd-ball keyword.

Forums are great if they are populated and get posted to often. Google, Bing, Yahoo crawl them daily.

This is hard labor. You must add tags and meta keywords to code, you must use the right code as well. (Flash or other types of code don't get searched well.) Text is the best and html/php and other standards are better than Ajax and some other obscure website coding. That Microsoft Flash-like stuff probably only gets cached by Microsoft. I wouldn't use any of it as the basis of my whole site design. Using parts of it for fun and visitor enjoyment is cool, but to build a whole site out of Flash, etc. is SEO suicide!

I have built sites in a number of ways, from straight html to more exotic Ruby on Rails and others. Over the years I have experimented with every Content Management System (CMS) and many other methods of SEO and site design.

For the money you cannot go wrong with WordPress. They have auto-SEO plugins that grab keywords and they ping (hit) major sites every time your content changes. You have to work within the framework of WordPress (Unless you know code), but overall it is the best choice for new and experienced alike. Saves lots of time on SEO tasks that are really a pain in the you-know-what.

You can pay for ads in Adwords (Google). You have to bid for a keyword. That is a process too. Text links at the top of the search for that keyword will give you good returns. Getting that keyword at the right price is the trick. Banner ads are not that great unless you are on the right sites where people are looking for what you have. You can spin your wheels and waste a lot of money fishing in the wrong hole. It is better to pay experienced people for a campaign and let them use their knowledge to get you proper placement. It seems like a lot of money, but usually the returns pay for it. If they offer campaigns for the product you offer then you are better off spending the money up front.

Content is King for search engine optimization and will always come down to the written word. As a marketer of a product you will be better served with targeted advertising. Random clicks from a search hardly ever yield results. The more targeted the better.

I just saw this on a banner here at DP: http://www.advertisingwebservice.com/AWSMHowItWorks.aspx

5 bucks to start and $59.00 per month plus click through costs. Might be a good deal for you.

Hope that gives you some info to get started. Be well!

    Allow customers/user to review products
Periodic press releases but don't have to be expensive. do free press release.
Create Product RSS feeds and submit to various feed directory.
    E-mail Marketing
search engine friendly URLs-Most ecommerce are not search engine friendly because sites are database driven.
