That's not a Google killer, more like a work-from-home-entrepreneur killer. That is some ridiculous competition for anyone making a living writing articles and doing Youtube work.

Indeed, no one else will get close for some time, Google have the brand for "search" (movies show characters using Google for example). As long as they don't screw up they wont lose the crown, all they have to do is not screw up :)

Google may not be perfect (if they were, I'd rank #1) but it is the best search engine out there. I think the only way google will be "killed" is if they do it to themselves. They are in the drivers seat right now and for the forseeable future!

Go Google! :D And give me a little love for "trade show booths"!

Google searches are still relevant. Garbage is rarely coming in Google than any other search engine.

Google is immortal.... like Satan... except Satan is nicer. People will always use Google. Many have tried to conquer Google and all have failed. You can't compete with the branding they have.

don't see how a little upstart could even try to challenge the big G, which more or less "owns" the web by now. Many have tried and failed, and many more will.

My point is not that Demand media (the company in the Wired article) is some how going to be a search engine, but rather that Google is killing itself by working with demand media to stuff their search results with garbage generated by Demand media. It is short sited on Google's part. Sure they make lots of ad dollars when people keep clicking and search because all of the results they see do not have the information they are looking for. But after a while some other search engine will filter out the likes of Demand Media and companies like them that spam with low quality SEOed results and people will ditch Google as spam.

For me it seems like google is not doing enough to battle spam-only sites these days. Gotten old and lazy I assume. Don't get me wrong, still by far the best search engine, but they do not have a lock in cost. The day something better will come along they do have a problem as it is so cheap to switch. I had my hopes with some proper competiton from bing a while, but seems like they went online a bit to early...

At this point, there is no Google Killer really. Google got the edge over every competitor.

So you have a company like DemandMedia producing mediocre content about millions of "low competition" topics. It is still legit content about the topic (it's not spun, it's not scraped, etc.) and Google will happily rank them for each of these terms until eventually a better site shows up for each search term.

I agree, the engine is soooo full of crap and spam lately its appauling. When I want to legitimately research something I hate seeing all these site just made to generate adsense revenue. I am not saying it doesn't have it's place but it would be nice to at least have a clean looking site that makes me want to stay and read
