Does your domain name affect the results on search engine?

I am making a site selling ebooks and templates.

I need a domain name for it though. Does it matter if the domain has the keywords of what my site is? Does that affect page rank?

For example will my search engine results be better if I have

freeebookstemplates.com or a domain name I already have which is
    carxp.com ?

    Thanks for your advice

Yes most certainly, domain name has a very large impact, in fact one of the largest so I'd go with getting keywords in there.

If your keywords are in your domain, then that is a big deal. Yes, it helps.

I would separate the words by dashes. Google treats a dash as a space. However, if you do more than two dashes in your URL - it will make it look to spammy to G.

I hear it has little impact...after all, how do SE really know how to spell? its all about
getting traffic to your site, getting more PR, etc...if the site is easy to reach, then
you may have better chances of success...

So I should go with a domain name like

download-ebooks-templates.com ? Would that work well?

Or go for a really long one like

    free-download-ebooks-templates-scripts.com ?

Or something short like bookxp.com ?

    Thanks for your help

With the SEO books I've read and articles I came across in the web, yes it really helps. Although through branding like ebay.com or amazon.com, you can still use your existing domain name but it really would take some time.

So I guess, you can do it right at the beginning :).

I think that google already knows that 'the good ones are already taken;' when it comes to domain name availability. So keywords in domain name shouldnt probably matter since it will give unfair advantage to a few cornerers of early domain buyers, cartels and domain squatters. I would say that there is no advantage in owning a domain with keywords in it simply because it has keywords in it. Its the path of the URL that comes after the domain that is supposed to ahve weightage or value when calculating 'value' or 'rank' of the website/domain in question.

    Hi,
Domain name definitely helps. More, if it is a key word then nothing can be best.
There is a reason behind it that search engine starts it's search from the URL and if it found the key word in domain name then it's very good for any site.

Domain name really plays a vital role when it comes to search engine ranking results. It gives a boost to ranking especially if the targeted keywords are included in the domain name itself. But don't just rely on it, focus to other factors like link building and updating of content.

This is a very interesting topic. Many proof shows that Domain name selection plays big roles when matching with keywords. Many REALITY proof that without a keyword match, branding instead, will make your site outshine others if done well.

Yes domain plays a big part if you want Search Engine to match your website fast on your targeted keywords.
If the traffic, backlinks, contents and quality of your website degrade over time, you will still drop in SE.
For a boost, ya it helps. But you will not have a good branding and short URL. Like someone mentioned, eBay, Amazon are great branding without matching keywords. Facebook, mySpace, YouTube, Google, Yahoo, Bing and more. All these words doesn't make sense to Google Search Engine. Having your OWN branding will create a new keyword for matching.

It all depends on you want ugly URL, quick index and easy to read URL or you want your own branding having people to search for your brand one day and type "YOUR BRAND" in the search engine for traffic. For your case, it means you want people to see your URL and understand - "Oh, this website has ... for download" OR you want people to have in mind - "YOURBRAND has ... for download".

Branding is harder to achieve as compared to keyword matching domain but it's long term results will be better if you do well in SEO and your content.

You can come out with branding that merges your keywords and create a unique "word" for your branding if you are creative.

    Maybe for example -
    ETDownloads.com for Ebooks/Templates Downloads?
    FETDownloads.com for Free....
    FETD.com probably taken
or have your name in part of it.. keeping it short and easy to remember yet meaningful and related.

Maybe I'm not as creative enough but just trying to get the idea across.

I'd rather go with bookxp.com, it is better to have a shorter URL because people can easily memorize it, so if they become interested with your offers, they can easily get back to your website whenever they wanted, unlike the other two which I think was over exaggerated.

for example facebook, youtube, myspace, twitter, etc. these sites have been successful, because they have this URL that were easy to memorize.. I know this isn't the only reason but it's one big factor.
