I would suggest you to try Press Releases - that's in case you want to promote a site that has been recently launched or one that has anything else newsworthy to offer. There's a great many free PR submission sites available (if you search my posts then you'll find a guide on getting indexed fast - I included quite a bit about PR submissions in there). Not only do PRs give you link juice but you will actually receive some targeted visits and may even draw real media attention to your site.

The best place to generate high amount of traffic is posting your link in HR PR social bookmarking sites and social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. Although Facebook and Twitter are no follow sites they can generate a huge amount of traffic.
Paid and free i do advertise on a few free sites and do get a bit of traffic but i believe this to be just bots.
I think the best place to receive quality traffic is through facebook and twitter. You need to create your own group for this.
I get most of my traffic from Google and some from social media website. You should submit all of your interesting pages so your website would be well indexed by search engines.
