    Hey All,

As you can see the thread name "Can I sell open source scripts?" I am not really selling open source script but my Idea is to modify that script or just take the base of that script and fully modify it and develop it a bit more, then will I be able to sell it?

    Thanks

Thats a good point that why would someone buy free script ? The answer is that I will not sell the script as it is,I will add some extra features and will customize it fully.

Open soruce means in PHP and all that the code is not encrypted and we are free to change the code, but my question is that can we sell it after modifying it ?

You would have to check the terms of the script. Some have specific terms that you are allowed to use it freely as long as you don't resell it, and some fully support redeveloping and don't care.

I have also seem some that fully support you modifying and reselling and open source script as long as the part of the script that is normally free to use, remains so.

From my experience, It's easier to offer custom modifications of a script on a client by client basis than it is to get people to buy a modification of a free script that is not supported by the original developers.

if the open source script is made by you, then of course you can sell it.
but if you sell other creators' script, if they get know, then for sure they will announce it on their official site, and you will probably get many refund request.

Just read the license that comes attached to the scrip. Many of them you can not remove the footer, others are free to edit and sale them as long as you distribute the free license with it. Don't lie to customers, Just tell them that is a modified/customized open source script.

Because the script is free on the net, it doesn't mean you can not sell it with your modifications. And there are millions of people who wants a customized open source script. Just read the license. ;)

You can make a few changes and then sell them. I doubt you can sell open source scripts because if you don't specify that they are open source, that's a breach of trust :)

I would not suggest selling modified scripts. Rather, I'd suggest selling mods for open source scripts. Mods are for sale all over the internet. The whole thought process behind open-source is giving to the community. By taking that script, modifying it, and then selling it, you're kind of sticking your finger up to that theory.

Wordpress is a good example of that. People don't modify the script itself for resale, but there are plenty of plug ins for sale that modify and add different functions.

But my intentions was to pick a dead script which is openSource, Not updated with bugs and all, Take the project into hand, Modify it, Make it up stable and add up some unique things that differ it from the actual version. Then to rate the script to decide to sell or to make it free. Simple Like that ;)

The world (online or offline) hit that low a LOOONG time ago. This has been a mjor commercial activity for a while. Redhat anyone? Just one example of this exact scenario that comes to mind.

Whether or not you can modify a script and/or resell it is up to the particular script license. Just because you can read the code does not mean that you can modify the script and/or resell it.

Of course, you can slways write something "similar" from scratch and who would know the difference except you and your conscience?

Whether or not you can sell it SUCCESSFULLY depends on your modifications, and your value added offerings such as support or updates.

Dang!, It depends upon license, If license states that anything can be done, One can do, Doing RedHat would be modifying cause u can see the code, But without breaching the Law acts, One can do such things if License states to be OpenSource and Allow everything or certain things.
