    I would add:

    >>don't get links from a page which already has too many links on it
    >>don't get links from link farms
    >>don't get links from sites which are not related to your theme
    >>don't accept redirect links, which means you enter a different site url and a different site opens...

reciprocal linking is not completely banned by Google, but they do not like it that much either. Excessive reciprocal linking does damage to your websites serps.

#3 is the best point to make - don't overdo backlinks, especially not in short periods of time. If you don't have the traffic to match the volume of links you'll likely be penalised for it.

What the "don'ts" come down to is a single, immutable fact.

Don't try to game the search engines

There are no shortcuts. If you follow W3C recommendations when it comes to document structure, then you have pretty much done your SEO work (what most people around here call on-page optimization).

After that you need to promote your site (what most around here call off-site SEO).

If you think of it in terms of site promotion rather than SEO you will remain on much firmer ground.

You are trying to promote the site to increase traffic. If you increase traffic and if the site has any worth, then the rankings will follow with time.

If you are trying to game the SE's, then any gains will be temporary at best.

The above, of course, applies to legit sites that are looking for sustained growth. A different strategy is to go black hat with disposable domains and make quick money over and over. That is a tough field to play in though. High risk and high reward.

Thanks for the information, it's incredibly useful. I've been warned about link building in the past, but are there "ball-park" figures for what Google deems as excessive?

I've linked to a number of directories (not on a reciprocal), and I'm about to start building backlinks, so this info would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

In my experience keeping it "natural" is the best way to go.

Not agree with this....buying links is risk if you buying on broker with script

But if you bought natural link such as on forum or else (without script) it's more safe and useful.
