Length of Google duplicate content penalty?

Discussion in 'Google' started by Parga, Nov 3, 2009.

I was so stupid and added a couple of hundred new pages (weather service) to my old site and now all my pages have dropped down in Google results.

I removed all the pages of duplicate content and made a new sitemap etc.

What to do now? How long the penalty lasts?

honestly it's very hard to get back your index,
probably change to a new domain and stop to copy are what you can do right now.

Your website will revive from the penalty pretty soon if you give "reasons" to Google to believe that this was an "accident". Create and publish new content. This will please Google :)

All you can do is wait until Google clears them from the index.

It depends on how the penalties were imposed.
Might take long if the whole domain was penalized. If only the duplicate content pages were penalized, it may not take long to get back the SERP.

    Thanks for answers.

    Google's webmaster tools says:

"We didn't detect any content issues with your site. As we crawl your site, we check it to detect any potential issues with content on your pages, including duplicate, missing, or problematic title tags or meta descriptions. These issues won't prevent your site from appearing in Google search results, but paying attention to them can provide Google with more information and even help drive traffic to your site. For example, title and meta description text can appear in search results, and useful, descriptive text is more likely to be clicked on by users."

Maybe it's not duplicate content penalty... This is strange

use 'webpage removal tool' under your Google webmaster tools account, to remove unwanted pages in index so that targeted pages will automatically gain attention those are currently dropped in serps...it works best!

Is it possible to remove all the pages under certain folder at once?

Does this remove all the pages (or links) under myfolder or only the index-page from Google's search results:

    http://www.mysite.com/myfolder

What you can do is remove all copied content URL's from your website, keep on building links and content to your website. Hope, it will help your website get back on top in search engine results

Using Webmaster tool, you can ask for reindex and adjust the crawlers to index or not index particular folder as per you need.

Also you are talking about dropped in SERP in your first thread. Prob., its not penalty. Stop duplicate content and get some quality related links. It will be back soon.

We have had an issue with this in the past due to the way our store is setup, so we could not remove the duplicate content and were getting penalised for it. We fixed it by using canonical tags, it took no more then a few days for pages to start showing again.

yes u can remove all the pages including inner links...but you should delete those from your root directory first...removal tool will work when the server returns "404 not found"

If u dnt want to delete the old indexed pages but still want new pages indexed plus gain nice serps then simply use, canonical tag to new pages.

There is no such thing as Duplicate content penalty .. told and repeated hundreds of times ..
There is just a filter of the duplicate pages ..

There is no such thing as Duplicate Content Penalty, and Filter just shows the most relevant of your pages and filters others, just Check this link from Google Itself :- googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2008/09/demystifying-duplicate-content-penalty.html
